San Antonio Spurs guard Stephon Castle (5) celebrates with teammates after an NBA basketball game against the Dallas Mavericks, Saturday, Feb. 7, 2026, in San Antonio.

Stephon Castle had a job to do, and he was determined to do it well.

He had studied tape. He had solicited advice from teammates. He felt as ready as he could be when his spotlight moment came.

Having soared through the game of his life in the Spurs’ 135-123 triumph over Dallas on Saturday, Castle’s next task was to bang the team’s postgame victory drum in the center of the Frost Bank Center court for the first time.

Afterward, the maestro of the Spurs’ nightly drum circle was ready with a critique of Castle’s skills on the skins.

“He has some range to get better,” Victor Wembanyama said.

That was about all that was out of rhythm for Castle on a Saturday spent marching to his own beat.

Castle finished the night with his second career triple-double. And what a triple-double it was: A career-high 40 points, a season-high 12 rebounds and 12 assists.

“Having a game like this, it’s definitely a dream come true,” Castle said.

More like something out of his wildest dreams. Before Saturday, only one player in Spurs history had ever notched a 40-point triple double.

That was David Robinson, who did it twice.

Robinson’s most recent such outing came Nov. 9, 1993 against Minnesota — nearly 11 years before Castle was born.

At age 21 and 98 days, Castle is the youngest player in league annals to post a 40-12-12 line, breaking a mark previously held by Oscar Robertson.

“Best game of his career so far,” Wembanyama said. “It’s one of the best stat lines I’ve seen with my own eyes.”

Castle’s favorite part of his favorite night in the NBA?

“Just not having to force it,” he said.

Indeed, all of Castle’s points came from simply playing the game as it what presented to him. The Mavericks opened the game with a different game plan than they employed two nights earlier in a loss to the Spurs in Dallas, using big man Daniel Gafford to defend the 6-foot-6 Castle at the start.

Castle spent the opening moments of the game patiently working the offense, setting screens to force Gafford off him and finding teammates in mismatches.

“When you have that type of approach, it’s amazing how much you end up being the recipient of the advantage you may have created for your teammate,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said.

Castle had 21 points in the first half, by which point he had not missed a field goal attempt. He made his first 10 tries, and did not miss one until the 8:51 mark of the third quarter.

By intermission, the Spurs were ahead 81-69 after posting their highest-scoring first half of the season and matching their fourth-highest in club history.

“When you have a guy performing like this over a scouting report, it’s like he out-coached the other team,” Wembanyama said. “He played the right way. He capitalized on the defensive choices and he made them pay for it.”

Castle’s night impressed the only Hall of Fame point guard in the building Saturday.

Dallas coach Jason Kidd logged 107 triple-doubles during his storied playing career. Never did he score 40 points in one.

“He was perfect in the first half and continued that in the second half,” Kidd said of Castle. “He was attacking. He made every shot he took, even the threes. He had an incredible game.”

Castle eventually flirted with mortality in the second half, finishing 15 of 19 overall and 3 of 5 from beyond the arc.

For good measure, Castle added three steals and a block to his night’s work. Only one other player in NBA history has posted a 40-point triple double while making at least 75% of his shots: Wilt Chamberlain.

“It felt good just to be out there feeling comfortable with every shot that I took and see them go in,” said Castle, last year’s NBA Rookie of the Year.

By the end of the third quarter, Castle had 34 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds. The Spurs were ahead by 23 and well on their way to their fourth straight victory and ninth in the past 12 games.

On the sidelines between quarters, rookie guard Dylan Harper asked Castle if he was ready to call it a night.

“I asked him, ‘You done for the day?’ ” Harper said. “He said, ‘Nah, I’m going to go get a 40-point triple double.’ He manifested it.”

Castle grabbed the 10th rebound he needed to complete his triple double on the defensive end with 6:35 to go, as he pulled in a missed layup by Dallas’ Cody Martin.

Moments later, Castle got an 11th rebound jamming home a missed Devin Vassell jumper. That gave him his 39th and 40th points.

Castle’s previous scoring high was 33, set last season at Charlotte – also on Feb. 7.

“Something about this day,” Castle said with a grin. “I don’t know.”

With 4:57 to play and the Spurs ahead by 17, Castle went to the bench for good.

He was greeted with a standing ovation from the Frost Bank Center faithful.

As the final horn sounded, Castle was swarmed by a gaggle of teammates, who buried him in an avalanche of Gatorade towels in celebration.

Then Castle was ushered to midcourt and out of his comfort zone. Wembanyama handed him a drum mallet to lead the crowd in its postgame victory chant.

“I just kind of went off the last couple I’d seen,” Castle said.

With each beat of the drum, Castle seemed to gain more confidence.

Boom. Boom.

Boom. Boom.

Castle did his best to rise to the occasion, as he had done all night.

“That was my first time,” Castle said. “I thought I did decent.”
