SAN ANTONIO — Stephon Castle recorded the first 40-point triple-double of his career in the San Antonio Spurs’ 138-125 win over the Dallas Mavericks on Saturday. Castle joined Spurs legend David Robinson (twice) as the only players in franchise history to record a 40-point triple-double. He did it in just 32 minutes, throwing down a thunderous tip slam to cross the threshold into San Antonio history.

Only Luka Dončić and LeBron James (twice each) have recorded 40-point triple-doubles at a younger age, per Stathead. Castle, who entered Saturday with an age of 21 years and 98 days, is the youngest player to ever put up the stat line of 40 points, 12 assists and 12 rebounds, passing Oscar Robertson, per ESPN’s Mike Wright. According to the NBA, Castle joined Wilt Chamberlain (three times) as the only players in NBA history to record a 40-point triple-double while shooting at least 75 percent from the field.

“Having a game like this is definitely a dream come true,” Castle said. “It felt good to just be out there, feel comfortable with every shot that I took.

When it was all over, Castle’s reward for his historic performance was to receive the mallet from Victor Wembanyama, leading Spurs fans by banging the drum as the team does after most wins.

“It’s like he’s outcoached the other team,” Victor Wembanyama said. “Because he played the right way, and he capitalized on the defensive choices, and he made them pay for it.”

Robinson, nicknamed The Admiral for his stint in the Navy, often sits courtside at games and has spoken with Castle at the practice facility in the past.

“Obviously, he’s a big part of this franchise, and what he did for this organization was great,” Castle said. “Just to hear my name alongside his is just special.”

It’s the exclamation point on an impressive sophomore season for the reigning Rookie of the Year, who has steadily made strides as a playmaker and shooter. Entering the season, fans and media often labeled Castle as more of a combo guard than a true point guard, but he started the evening 10th in the league in assists per game.

After Saturday’s 12 assists, which didn’t even match his career-high of 14, his point guard resume is looking stronger as the Spurs approach the All-Star break.

“I mean, that’s good for a guy that’s not a point guard, right?” De’Aaron Fox said. “At the end of the day, what we do doesn’t matter, if you’re a point guard, center, wing, whatever. Whenever you’re playing the right way, and I think he’s done that all year, you get rewarded like that.”
