The Stein Line

How is Spurs’ Jeremy Sochan handling NBA trade deadline chatter?

San Antonio Spurs forward Jeremy Sochan (10) warms up with his teammates before taking on the Milwaukee Bucks at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Thursday, Jan. 15, 2026. Sochan was given permission from the team to explore possible trade destinations before the NBA’s Feb. 5 trade deadline.
Spurs coach Mitch Johnson praised Jeremy Sochan for the way he’s handled himself in the face of greatly diminished playing time and reports that the team is shopping him ahead of the NBA’s Feb. 5 trade deadline.
The Stein Line reported earlier this week that the Spurs gave Sochan and his representatives permission to seek a new home. The report came as no surprise after Sochan fell out of coach Mitch Johnson’s rotation in mid-December.
The Spurs ruled Sochan out before Wednesday night’s 111-99 win at Houston. His status for Saturday’s game at Charlotte is uncertain.
Still, Sochan was on the bench rooting on his teammates against the Rockets. The Baylor alumnus is averaging 4.2 points, 2.7 rebounds and 1.0 assists in 13.1 minutes over 27 games after averaging 11.4 points, a career-high 6.5 rebounds and 2.4 assists in 25.3 minutes over 54 games last season.
“Consummate professional,” Johnson said when asked about Sochan before Wednesday’s game.
“He’s been great, whether you see him on the bench and the interactions with his teammates when he hasn’t played or when he’s gotten opportunities to play and made the most of them. Jeremy has been here now for four years and built up a lot of equity within this organization. I’ve appreciated his approach and his willingness to participate in every way we’ve asked him to this year.”

San Antonio Spurs forward Carter Bryant (11) and forward Jeremy Sochan (10) work to secure the rebound over the Milwaukee Bucks at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Thursday, Jan. 15, 2026. Sochan was given permission from the team to explore possible trade destinations before the NBA’s Feb. 5 trade deadline.
At practice Tuesday in San Antonio, Sochan was seen chatting with Spurs general manager Brian Wright.
“I hope they always feel we’re up front and honest with them,” Johnson said of Sochan and his teammates when asked how he thinks players are dealing with anxiety stemming from the looming trade deadline.
“There’s a lot of chatter and narratives going on, all the time. There are certain times where certain subjects are more talked about – the trade deadline is something that will be talked about a lot in the next week. We just try to control the things we can control. Try to win the game, and then tomorrow we’ve got to get up and go to work again. That’s been the approach since October.”
If the Spurs trade Sochan, it will mean their entire 2022 draft class will be gone after they dealt Malaki Branham and Blake Wesley last summer. The Spurs selected Sochan ninth overall, Branham (20th overall) and Wesley (25th overall).
