The Spurs’ Rising Stars streak continued Monday, with the NBA’s announcement that rookie Dylan Harper and sophomore Stephon Castle were selected for this year’s event at All-Star weekend.
Last year’s Rising Stars MVP, Castle is averaging 16.6 points, 5.7 rebounds and a team-best seven assists in his second pro season. Harper, the No. 2 pick in last June’s draft out of Rutgers, is averaging 10.2 points and 3.5 assists off the bench.
Spurs’ two-way player David Jones Garcia, meanwhile, will participate as part of the G League squad.
It marks the fourth year in a row the Spurs have placed at least one player in the Rising Stars challenge. They are the only team in the league to boast multiple Rising Stars in each of the past three seasons.
A year ago, Castle’s Rising Stars MVP award was a precursor winning to the NBA Rookie of the Year award. Victor Wembanyama was initially named to last year’s squad, but withdrew after being selected as a Western Conference All-Star reserve.
Castle joins a group of Rising Stars sophomores that includes Chicago’s Matas Buzelis, Portland’s Donovan Clingan, Washington’s Kyshawn George, Oklahoma City’s Ajay Mitchell, Washington’s Alex Sarr, Houston’s Reed Sheppard, Cleveland’s Jaylon Tyson, Miami’a Kel’el Ware and Memphis’ Jaylon Wells and Cam Spencer.
Harper is part of a rookie crop that includes No. 1 overall pick Cooper Flagg of Dallas, Memphis’ Cedric Coward, Brooklyn’s Egor Demin, Philadelphia’s V.J. Edgecombe, Washington’s Tre Johnson, Charlotte’s Kon Knueppel, Toronto’s Colin Murray-Boyles and New Orleans’ Deriq Queen and Jeremiah Fears.
On Tuesday, the rookies and sophomores will be drafted into three teams, with a fourth comprised a contingent of G League stars. Those four teams will compete in a tournament Feb. 13 as part of All-Star weekend festivities in Los Angeles.
