Why Dylan Harper wasn’t surprised to be named a Rising Star

Spurs rookie Dylan Harper was not surprised by Monday’s news that he was chosen to participate in the NBA Rising Stars Challenge at All-Star weekend next month.

That confidence was not due to own hubris.

“In my head, I thought every rookie made it,” Harper said.

On the contrary, only 10 members of this season’s rookie class received the honor, along with 10 sophomores. Spurs teammate Stephon Castle is set to join Harper from the latter group, giving the club multiple Rising Stars honorees for the third season in a row.

“It’s a testament to me, but it’s also a testament to us winning,” Harper said. “So I think about just going out there and just putting my best foot forward.”

The MVP of last year’s Rising Stars event, Castle heads into Wednesday’s game at Houston averaging 16.6 points, 5.7 rebounds and a team-best seven assists in his second pro season.

Harper, the No. 2 pick in last June’s draft out of Rutgers, is averaging 10.2 points and 3.5 assists off the bench.

“We’re blessed to get invited to that, especially at this point in our career,” Castle said. “It should be a good weekend.”

Castle joins a group of Rising Stars sophomores that includes Chicago’s Matas Buzelis, Portland’s Donovan Clingan, Washington’s Kyshawn George and Alex Sarr, Oklahoma City’s Ajay Mitchell, Houston’s Reed Sheppard, Cleveland’s Jaylon Tyson, Miami’a Kel’el Ware and Memphis’ Jaylon Wells and Cam Spencer.

Harper is part of a rookie crop that includes No. 1 overall pick Cooper Flagg of Dallas, Memphis’ Cedric Coward, Brooklyn’s Egor Demin, Philadelphia’s V.J. Edgecombe, Washington’s Tre Johnson, Charlotte’s Kon Knueppel, Toronto’s Colin Murray-Boyles and New Orleans’ Deriq Queen and Jeremiah Fears.

The rookies and sophomores will be drafted into three teams, with a fourth comprised by a contingent of G League stars – one of whom is another Spurs rookie guard, David Jones-Garcia.

Those four teams will compete in a tournament Feb. 13 as part of All-Star weekend festivities in Los Angeles.

Castle said he is looking forward to making a run at a second straight Rising Stars MVP award, unless he arrives in L.A. feeling especially altruistic.

“I might let Dylan have it,” Castle said.

The Rising Stars showcase will serve as a family reunion of sorts for Harper, whose older brother Ron is a member of the G League squad.

Six years Dylan’s senior, Ron got the better of the driveway one-on-one games growing up.

“They were very lopsided,” Dylan Harper said. “It was very him beating me. And then I win once, and the game would be over.”

Bryant’s role remains in flux

With Devin Vassell back from a 13-game layoff, it appeared rookie Carter Bryant would be the odd man out of the Spurs’ rotation.

Bryant did not play in the first half of the Spurs’ 104-95 loss against New Orleans on Sunday.

With the Spurs spiraling into a 20-point hole in the third quarter, coach Mitch Johnson tabbed Bryant in search of signs of life and found one.

Bryant scored six points with two rebounds and a pair of rebounds in seven minutes, part of a comeback that helped the Spurs briefly regain the lead in the fourth quarter.

“Carter was a part of that group that felt like they were putting their energy into the right spots and competing,” Johnson said. “Next thing you know get a few open shots and he makes them.

Bryant’s minutes are likely to be limited for as long as the Spurs have a fully healthy roster. Johnson expects the 20-year-old will be ready for whatever opportunity comes along.

“That kid has worked his butt off and tried to be about the right stuff,” Johnson said. “As the game slows down, he’ll continue to be more productive.”
