INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Spurs guards Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper will each have a college teammate by their side when Team Melo takes the court at the Rising Stars mini-tournament Friday night at All-Star weekend.
Coached by Hall of Famer Carmelo Anthony, Team Melo includes two members of Connecticut’s 2024 national championship team: Castle and Portland big man Donovan Clingan.
I"t’s going to be fun," Castle said. “I haven’t played with’ DC’ in two years, so it’s going to be cool to be back on the court with him.”
Clingan talked to Slamonline.com in June 2024 about that Huskies squad’s great camaraderie.
“There was a bunch of guys who gave it their all every single day for 11 months of the year,” Clingan said. “It’s a special group. We were a brotherhood. Everyone loved each other, and that’s going to be a special team. There’s no one that’s going to be left out forever. We’re all going to stay in touch, we’re all going to be brothers for life.”
The UConn stars were on the NBA’s All-Rookie 2024-25 team after the Spurs drafted Castle fourth overall and the Trail Blazers selected Clingan with the No. 7 overall pick. Castle was the Rookie of the Year.
Team Melo also includes two members of Rutgers 2024-2025 team: Harper and Utah forward Ace Bailey, who was named as a Rising Stars injury replacement after a foot injury sidelined Dallas guard Cooper Flagg.
The Spurs selected Harper second overall in the June draft after the Mavericks made Flagg the top pick. The Jazz selected Bailey fifth overall.
Utah coach Will Hardy was asked about Bailey and Harper before the Jazz hosted the Spurs on Jan. 22.
“His ability to cut, crash and then his quick twitch getting off the ground — that’s where you really see his length and athleticism,” Hardy said of Bailey. “He’s done an amazing job of finding ways to impact the game when we’re not running a ton of plays for him.”
Harper and Bailey were both 18 while playing for the Scarlet Knights last season.
“Dylan is a heck of a young player,” said Hardy, a former Spurs assistant coach. “He’s got a good presence about him. … He’s tough to keep out of the paint and does a good job of recognizing his matchup. But he keeps the game pretty simple and plays with a ton of force and physicality.”
