3 takeaways as Keldon Johnson’s spark leads Spurs past Lakers

San Antonio Spurs forward Keldon Johnson (3) goes up for a shot over Los Angeles Lakers guard Gabe Vincent (7) and forward Dalton Knecht (4) during the first quarter at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2026.
Victor Wembanyama has some prime competition in his unexpected NBA Sixth Man of the Year chase.
Keldon Johnson has entered the chat.
Johnson scored 27 points off the bench, and Wembanyama also came off the bench and turned in a double-double as the Spurs’ second unit keyed a 107-91 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers at the Frost Bank Center on Wednesday.
The Spurs won despite a 38-point, 10-rebound and 10-assist triple double from Lakers’ star Luka Doncic.
Los Angeles was without All-Star forward LeBron James, as the 41-year-old sat out the second night of a back-to-back.
Playing in his second game since returning from a knee injury, Wembanyama added 16 points, 14 rebounds and four blocks.
With the loss, the Lakers fell to 23-12. The Spurs improved to 26-11.
The Spurs limited the Lakers to 91 points, a season low for points allowed, and improved to 4-0 when giving up less than 100 points.
Here are three takeaways from Wednesday’s victory, which wasn’t the prettiest but sufficient:
1. Wemby’s minutes remain a nightly puzzle
In his second game back from a knee injury, Wembanyama remained a reserve and on a minutes restriction.
A night earlier in Memphis, Wembanyama reached his 21-minute threshold with 3:46 remaining and had to watch the end of a disheartening 106-105 loss from the bench.
On Wednesday, Wembanyama reached his prescribed 26 minutes and was able to finish the game.
Spurs coach Mitch Johnson acknowledged the complications inherent in trying to spread Wembanyama’s minutes throughout the important parts of the game.
The one thing that we’ve said and I feel very strongly about is I want him to play a natural flow of minutes,” Johnson said, “which what I mean by that is I don’t want him to sit out for a quarter game play. That’s not natural. I don’t think fair to him.
“I don’t want to get too cute where he doesn’t play the first half and now the game’s taken on a personality.”
2. The 3-point power outage continues
On paper, Wednesday represented a chance for the Spurs’ ailing offense to heal itself.
The Lakers came into the night boasting the NBA’s second-worst defensive rating since the turn of the new year.
Instead, the Spurs’ 3-point power outage continued.
They were 4 of 25 from beyond the arc. Jeremy Sochan — yes, that Jeremy Sochan — made half of them. Johnson had the other half.
Julian Champagine and De’Aaron Fox combined to go 0 for 12.
The Spurs were saved, in part, because the Lakers were atrocious from 3-point range themselves, going 9 of 39.
As good as Doncic was in most every other offensive area Tuesday, he was off from the 3-point line, finishing 2 of 9.

San Antonio Spurs forward Keldon Johnson (3) reacts after making a dunk on the Los Angeles Lakers during the second quarter at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2026. Johnson was the Spurs’ leading scorer with 27 points in his team’s 107-91 victory over the Lakers.
3. Keldon Johnson rising bench ranks
Slowly but surely, Johnson is rising in the ranks of all-time Spurs bench scorers.
With 2,275 career bench points, Johnson recently passed Marco Belinelli for fifth place on that list.
He’s got a ways to go to catch Hall of Famer Manu Ginobili, the only Spurs player to top 8,000 points as a reserve.
Still, the way Johnson has embraced his role as a sixth man is one of the ongoing storylines of the Spurs’ season.
