MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Spurs’ post-Christmas hangover continued Tuesday with a 106-105 loss to the short-handed Memphis Grizzlies at the FedEx Forum.

Jaren Jackson Jr. and Cam Spencer each scored 21 points as Memphis snapped a four-game losing streak. It did so without a trio of key players out with injury – Ja Morant, Zach Edey and Cedric Coward.

Victor Wembanyama returned from a two-game absence with a knee bone bruise to pump in 30 points in 21 minutes off the bench. His minutes limit reached, however, Wembanyama was unavailable for the final 3 ½ minutes down the stretch in a tight game.

Julian Champagnie added 23 points for the Spurs, who are 2-4 since a Christmas Day victory over Oklahoma City.

Heading into last Saturday, the Spurs were 14-1 against teams with losing records. They have lost consecutive contests against Portland and Memphis to sully that mark.

Tuesday also marked the Spurs’ first defeat this season against a Southwest Division foe.

Here are three takeaways from Tuesday’s loss, which dropped the Spurs to 25-11 heading into Wednesday’s home game against the Los Angeles Lakers:

1. Wemby back (but on the bench)

Wembanyama hasn’t logged more than 30 minutes in a game since Nov. 14, when he played 38 against Golden State.

That’s the game in which Wembanyama suffered the calf injury that landed him on the injured list the first time. Tuesday in Memphis marked his seventh game off the bench in that stretch, a move coach Mitch Johnson made in order to better manage his minutes.

Johnson said Wembanyama would be eased into a full workload, in part to save him from his own competitiveness.

“It’s just going to be one of those living, breathing kind of situations that we’re going to continue to juggle and balance until we don’t,” Johnson said.

When it comes to Wembanyama, Johnson said, the goal has not changed.

“We want him to be healthy for years,” Johnson said, “not just trying to win the next couple games or whatever it may be.”

2. Fox needs to be better, and has been

The Spurs had all kinds of issues Tuesday. One of them was De’Aaron Fox had his worst game in a Spurs uniform.

Headed into the third quarter Fox — the team’s second-leading scorer — had managed only two points on 1-of-10 shooting. Almost predictably, Fox had a brief flurry in the fourth quarter that nearly stole the game for the Spurs.

His second made field goal came on a floater with 2:56 to go. He followed that with a 3-pointer, then a chase-down block of Jaylen Wells, then another floater.

When he was done, the Spurs had a 105-101 lead and seemed poised to sneak away with a win.

Given a chance to win the game at the horn after Jock Landale clanged a pair of foul shots, Fox instead got hung up in mid-air and ended up turning the ball over.

3. Sochan gives a professional performance

With his team’s energy lagging, Spurs coach Mitch Johnson tabbed former lottery pick turned little used reserve Jeremy Sochan to try and provide a spark.

Give Sochan credit for being ready.

Before Tuesday, Sochan had not played since Dec. 27 against Utah. He had not tallied double-digit minutes in a game since Dec. 19 at Atlanta.

Sochan gave the Spurs 14 minutes of physical play in Memphis, with six rebounds and a dunk. When Stephon Castle fouled out in the fourth quarter, it was Sochan who replaced him to guard Jackson.

Sochan with 0-for-3 from 3-point range, including an in-and-out miss on the Spurs’ second-to-last possession of the game.

Even so, he brought the wood to a game few other Spurs did.
