Revenge will be a motivating factor – as well as their desire to just get back on the winning track – when the Spurs host New York on Wednesday in the first meeting between the teams since the NBA Cup final two weeks ago in Las Vegas.
“Of course, we are looking forward to it,” Victor Wembanyama said after the Spurs lost 113-101 to Cleveland on Monday for their first two-game losing streak since early November.
“We owe them one, and we owe ourselves one more than anything,” Wembanyama added.
OG Anunoby scored 28 points, Jalen Brunson had 25 and the Knicks rallied to down the Spurs 124-113 to win the Cup on Dec. 16 in a game that did not count toward the season totals of the teams and the players.
The Spurs had an 11-point lead with two minutes left in the third quarter of the hard-fought game, but the physical Knicks outscored them 43-21 in the final 14 minutes. In that span, the Spurs got outrebounded 25-8 and outscored 18-4 in the paint.
For the game, New York outrebounded the Spurs 59-42, with Mitchell Robinson grabbing 15 boards, including 10 on the offensive end in 18 minutes. Karl-Anthony Towns had 11 rebounds to go along with 16 points.
Dylan Harper led the Spurs with 21 points, Wembanyama had 18 off the bench while playing under a minutes restriction and De’Aaron Fox collected 16.
The game was the latest entertaining matchup between the teams.
On March 29, 2024 in Wembanyama’s rookie season, the Frenchman had 40 points, 20 rebounds and seven assists to lead the Spurs to a 130-126 overtime win in San Antonio despite Brunson pumping in a career-high 61 points.
New York avenged the loss the following season when Mikal Bridges scored 41 points to help overcome Wembanyama’s 42-point, 18-rebound effort in his Christmas Day debut.
Three months later, the Spurs bounced back to beat the Knicks 120-105 behind Sandro Mamukelashvili’s history-making 34-point performance in 19 minutes. Mamukelashvili, who now plays for Toronto, became the first player in NBA history to score 34 points while playing less than 20 minutes.
Both teams are 23-9 and seeded second in their respective conferences. But the Knicks are playing better basketball after winning three in a row and with Brunson averaging 35.7 points over his last four games.
“They have a great team,” Spurs forward Devin Vassell said. “They got a great coach over there (in former Spurs assistant Mike Brown) and they play physical. They’ve always been a good team, so just excited for that matchup.”
“That’ll be a good test for us, for sure. That’s one of the better teams in the league, a team that’s trying to win a championship,” said Fox, who returned Monday to score 14 points after a one-game absence caused by a left adductor tightness and flu-like symptoms.

Coach, Wembanyama enjoy moment
Cavaliers coach Kenny Atkinson and Wembanyama shared a hug late in Monday’s game. Atkinson served as an assistant coach for the French National Team, working alongside head coach Vincent Collet to guide Wembanyama during the the Paris 2024 Olympics. That squad, which included Rudy Gobert, lost 98-87 to Team USA in the gold medal game.
Atkinson, who also spent several seasons in France as a player, was asked before the game if he sees anything different in Wembanyama’s game this season.
“Force, force, force. … He’s driving the ball harder, hitting guys with shoulders," Atkinson said. “He’s in the post more, in the paint more.”
Former Longhorn notches double-double
Texas-ex Jarrett Allen enjoyed another big game against the Spurs.
The 6-foot-11, 250-pound center had 27 points and 10 rebounds after entering the game averaging 19.1 points and 12.4 rebounds in his previous eight outings against San Antonio.
The graduate of St. Stephen’s Episcopal School in Austin said his main goal was to muscle up against the Spurs, who he called an “amazing team.”
“In every aspect of the game, whether it’s rebounding, getting through screens, even me setting screens, just trying to bring the physicality, throw them off their game and throw the first punch,” he said in an interview with NBC Sports.
East Central grad in the house
San Antonio’s NaLyssa Smith, who helped the Las Vegas Aces win the WNBA title last season, was a face in the crowd at Monday’s game.
The East Central grad and Baylor alumnus proudly displayed a Spurs No. 3 jersey - the same number she wears for the Aces - with “Champ” written on it. Smith averaged 8.2 points and 5.3 rebounds for the Aces in 27 games, including 26 starts, after Las Vegas acquired her in a trade with the Dallas Wings for a 2027 first-round draft pick.
