LAS VEGAS — Spurs star Victor Wembanyama played through adversity Tuesday night after learning earlier in the day his grandmother had died in France, a team source said.
Wembanyama scored 18 points in 25 minutes off the bench under a minutes restriction, but the Knicks put together a dominant fourth quarter to secure a 124-113 win in the NBA Cup final.
OG Anunoby scored a game-high 28 points, Jalen Brunson tossed in 25 to win MVP honors, and the Knicks broke open what had been a tight game by outscoring the Spurs 35-19 in the final 12 minutes to claim their first title in the NBA’s in-season tournament.
Rookie Dylan Harper led the Spurs with 21 points off the bench. De’Aaron Fox and Stephon Castle finished with 16 and 15 points, respectively.
After trailing by 11 points late in the third quarter, the Knicks went ahead 97-94 with an 8-0 run to start the fourth quarter that Brunson started with a 3-pointer and San Antonio Wagner alumnus Jordan Clarkson capped with consecutive baskets from beyond the arc. After a timeout, the run continued to 11-1, giving New York a 100-95 cushion.
Karl-Anthony Towns chipped in 16 points for the Knicks. Clarkson finished with 15 off the bench.
The Knicks outrebounded the Spurs 59-42 with Mitchell Robinson grabbing a game-high 15 boards, including 10 on the offensive end. Wembanyama finished with six rebounds and two blocks to go along with his 18 points.
Here are three takeaways from the first of three meetings with the Knicks, with the second one set for New Year’s Eve at the Frost Bank Center:
1. Wembanyama had a tough final frame
After scoring 22 points in just 21 minutes in Saturday’s win over Oklahoma City, Wembanyama struggled to match that high-energy effort against the tough, physical Knicks.
After coming off the bench at the start of the second period against the Thunder in his first game after missing 12 in a row due to a calf injury, Wembanyama entered Tuesday’s game with 7:03 left in the first quarter and the Spurs nursing a 15-12 advantage.
He hit 7 of 17 from the field for the game, including 2 of 6 from 3-point range, after scoring 15 points in nine minutes in the fourth quarter against Oklahoma City.
In the final frame against the Knicks, Wembanyama missed all four of his shots from the field, including an 0-of-3 effort from deep, to finish with just two points in eight minutes.
2. Clarkson came up big late
The former San Antonio prep star scored eight of his 15 points in the fourth quarter.
In 10 minutes, he hit 2 of 3 from 3-point territory to give Brunson a much-needed scoring sidekick.
The Wagner graduate also played tough defense on the perimeter for a Knicks team that used its physicality well all over the court.
3. Barnes’ 3-point shot went cold again
The Spurs’ TV broadcast crew likes to calls Harrison Barnes “Mr. One-Hundred Percent” for his sharpshooting from 3-point range, but the veteran was 0 for 4 from deep against the Knicks after going 0 for 8 from downtown on Saturday.
Barnes undoubtedly will get back on track, but he picked a bad time to go cold from beyond the arc.
