Image

Breaking down the position-by-position matchups in the NBA Finals between the Spurs and New York Knicks:

POINT GUARD

Spurs: Stephon Castle (6-6, 2nd season)

Knicks: Jalen Brunson (6-2, 8th)

Breakdown: Castle continued his eye-popping playoff run in the conference finals, shaking off early turnover issues to become a proper thorn in the Thunder’s side. The 21-year-old’s scoring and rebounding will be crucial , but his rugged, take-no-prisoners defense has the potential to swing the series. Just ask (in order) Portland’s Deni Avdija, Minnesota’s Anthony Edwards, and two-time MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of Oklahoma City. With Castle in his jersey, Gilgeous-Alexander barely cracked 40% shooting in the seven-game conference finals. Brunson will be Castle’s next All-Star target, and the Knicks guard presents an equally difficult challenge. Since joining the Knicks, Brunson has averaged 31.7 points against the Spurs. He has topped 30 points five times in the playoffs, and was named MVP of the Eastern Conference finals. When Brunson gets going — and he often does — the Knicks’ offense becomes impossible to stop.

Edge: Knicks.

SHOOTING GUARD

Spurs: De’Aaron Fox (6-3, 8th)

Knicks: Josh Hart (6-4, 9th)

Breakdown: Fox missed the first two games of the conference finals with a high ankle sprain, and fought bravely through the final five games on a hobbled right leg. At substantially less than 100%, the two-time All-Star never quite hit his peak against the Thunder — but the calm he brought to an at-times frenetic Spurs’ offense helped get them over the hump in the series. The Spurs are hopeful three days off will help Fox get closer to full health. If he can return to form, the Spurs’ offense will get a substantial boost. Hart is the ultimate hustle guy and connector, whose make-or-miss tendencies should loom large in the series.

Edge: Spurs.

San Antonio Spurs guard Devin Vassell (24) passes around New York Knicks center Mitchell Robinson during the first half of their NBA game with the New York Knicks at the Frost Bank Center on Friday, March 29, 2024. San Antonio beat the Knicks 130-126 in overtime.

SMALL FORWARD

Spurs: Devin Vassell (6-5, 6th)

Knicks: Mikal Bridges (6-6, 8th)

Breakdown: Spurs coach Mitch Johnson has called Vassell the Spurs’ most consistent performer during this postseason run, and he might be on to something. Game-after-game, the 25-year-old Vassell has been able to provide a little of everything — a timely bucket here, a key rebound there, a block or a steal or a determined stint of on-the-ball defense. Bridges has figured some things out after a slow start to the Knicks playoff run, averaging 18.5 points in New York’s four-game sweep of Cleveland in the Eastern Conference finals. He has always been something of a Spurs killer, dating to the 41 points he scored against them on Christmas Day 2024. Bridges played with Brunson and Hart on Villanova’s 2018 NCAA national championship team, so there is some connectivity there.

Edge: Spurs.

Image
San Antonio Spurs forward Julian Champagnie (30) celebrates a 3-pointer that tied the score at 86-86 during the second half of an NBA game with the New York Knicks in San Antonio, Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2025. Champagne led all scorers with 36 points to help the Spurs beat the Knicks 134-132.

POWER FORWARD

Spurs: Julian Champagnie (6-7. 4th)

Knicks: O.G. Anunoby (6-7, 9th)

Breakdown: Don’t expect the Knicks to lose track of Champagnie in this series. The 24-year-old swished a club-record 11 3-pointers against them on New Year’s Eve, leading the Spurs to their lone victory over New York in three tries this season. Champagnie is coming off a big Game 7, in which his 20 points and six 3-pointers helped eliminate Oklahoma City. Anunoby is a big and physical wing whose greatest value in the series might be in muscling 7-foot-4 Spurs star Victor Wembanyama. At 6-7 and 240 pounds, Anunoby seems built in a lab for the job.

Edge: Knicks.

Image
San Antonio Spurs forward Victor Wembanyama (1) fights for a rebound with New York Knicks center Karl-Anthony Towns (32) during the first half of an NBA game in San Antonio, Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2025.

CENTER

Spurs: Victor Wembanyama (7-4, 3rd)

Knicks: Karl-Anthony Towns (7-0, 11th)

Breakdown: Somehow, some way Wembanyama has exceeded expectations in his first voyage through the NBA playoffs, averaging 23.2 points, 10.8 rebounds and 3.5 blocks while anchoring a Spurs defense that has been a postseason juggernaut. He is only the second player in league history to earn his first All-NBA first team mention and first NBA Finals berth in league history. If the Knicks cannot figure out the Spurs’ 22-year-old All-Star on both ends, it will make for a short Finals for them. As a floor-spreading 7-footer, Towns poses challenges for the Spurs as well. If Wembanyama is assigned to guard him, Towns’ 3-point prowess will draw the 7-4 Frenchman away from the paint where he is most effective. If the Spurs opt to defend Towns with a smaller player, the six-time All-Star is liable to punish them in the paint and on the glass.

Edge: Spurs.

San Antonio Spurs guard Dylan Harper (2) tries to block a shot by New York Knicks guard Miles McBride (2) during the second half of an NBA game in San Antonio, Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2025. The Spurs beat the Knicks 134-132.

BENCH

Breakdown: Spurs forward Keldon Johnson has mostly had a rough go of it during his first taste of the NBA playoffs but seemed to find his Sixth Man of the Year form near the end of the conference finals. Rookie guard Dylan Harper appears to have moved past the groin injury that slowed him during the previous series. With his craftiness and scoring ability, the 20-year-old Harper could be a player who swings the series in the Spurs’ favor. Backup center Luke Kornet will need to hold the fort on the interior for the few minutes a night Wembanyama is on the bench. New York’s reserve unit is rife with snipers who can get hot — see Miles McBride and Landry Shamet — as well as the San Antonio-grown Jordan Clarkson, who always seems to give his hometown team fits. Mitchell Robinson is a question mark with a broken finger. If the 7-foot Robinson cannot play or is limited, the Knicks’ frontcourt depth is suddenly a bit thin. Former Spurs forward Jeremy Sochan, who joined the Knicks at midseason, has not played since the conference semifinals.

Edge: Spurs.

COACHING

Spurs: Mitch Johnson (2nd year)

Knicks: Mike Brown (12th year overall, 1st with Knicks)

Breakdown: When the Spurs were last in the Finals 12 years ago, Johnson was coaching 9- and 10-year-olds on the AAU circuit in Seattle. The 39-year-old former Gregg Popovich assistant has grown up fast in his first taste of the NBA playoffs, guiding the Spurs past the defending champion Thunder in the conference finals. Boosted by an All-Star staff that includes defensive guru — and future Orlando Magic coach — Sean Sweeney, Johnson and the Spurs will not be overmatched here. The 56-year-old Brown accomplished something in his first season on the New York bench that the past 14 of his predecessors could not — get the Knicks back to the Finals for the first time since 1999. It is the second trip to the Finals as a head coach for Brown, who was at the helm in Cleveland in 2007 when the Spurs swept the Cavaliers. Brown was on Popovich’s bench during the Spurs’ run to the 2003 championship and was part of the Golden State staff for five of the Warriors’ Finals visits between 2016 and 2022. All in all, it should be an interesting chess match between a pair of Popovich assistants.
