3 Takeaways as Spurs collapse late against Cavaliers

Image
San Antonio Spurs forward Victor Wembanyama (1) plays against the Cleveland Cavaliers during the second half of an NBA game at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Monday, Dec. 29, 2025. The Spurs fell 113-101 to the Cavaliers.

After the Spurs’ 113-101 loss to Cleveland on Monday, Mitch Johnson wasn’t sure if his team needed a coach or a therapist.

“It looked like we had an extreme amount of anxiety on offense,” Johnson said. “It felt like an unnecessary feeling of desperation tonight.”

The Spurs could not overcome their worst shooting performance of the season to escape the Cavaliers.

Jarrett Allen scored 27 points with 10 rebounds and Darius Garland added 15 points and 11 assists as Cleveland defeated the Spurs for the second time this season.

Victor Wembanyama stuffed the box score with 26 points and 14 rebounds, but got little consistent help.

Cleveland outscored the Spurs 37-23 in the fourth quarter to win the game comfortably.

The Spurs have followed an eight-game winning streak with their third two-game losing skid of the season, and the first since dropping consecutive games against Golden State on Nov. 12 and Nov. 14.

The Spurs have yet to lose three straight.

That streak will be put to the test Wednesday with a New Year’s Eve home contest against New York.

Here are three takeaways from Monday’s defeat, which sent the Spurs to 23-9:

1. Fox’s return doesn’t produce expected spark

De’Aaron Fox was back in the Spurs’ starting lineup after a one-game absence due to groin tightness, as well as a bout of the flu. The return of the team’s second-leading scorer did not give the offense the expected boost.

On the contrary, the Spurs ended with their lowest-scoring night of the season.

Fox ended with 14 points on 4 of 13 shooting as each member of the Spurs’ vaunted trio of ball-handing guards struggled for traction.

Stephon Castle found his way to 15 points and eight assists, but went 5-of-13 from the floor with five turnovers and five fouls.

Dylan Harper went 5-for-11 with 11 points off the bench, but also coughed up four turnovers.

2. Free throws prevent an even bigger bloodbath

For the second game in a row at home, the Spurs couldn’t throw the ball in the ocean

Two nights after 10-of-44 3-pointers against Utah, the Spurs were a dreadful 7 of 31 on Monday.

Outside of Wembanyama – who made 2 of 6 – the Spurs’ other four starters combined to go 3 of 20 from beyond the arc.

That is no way to win an NBA game in 2025.

The Spurs shot 38.6% (32 of 83) overall, the first time this season they connected on fewer than 40% of their attempts.

Had it not been for an overwhelming edge at the foul line, where the Spurs outscored Cleveland 30-18, the game might have gotten out of hand even sooner.

3. With paint packed, Cavs find a new way to win

Under typical circumstances, Cleveland coach Kenny Atkinson would have prepared for Monday’s game by digging deep into film of the Cavaliers’ 130-117 victory over the Spurs on Dec. 5.

This time, he barely bothered.

Wembanyama and Luke Kornet were both out for the Spurs in that night, leaving the Cavs a free pass to the rim.

With the Spurs’ pair of 7-footers available Monday?

“It’s a different game,” Atkinson said.

Cleveland outscored the Spurs 80-44 in the previous meeting. The Cavs’ paint points were nearly cut in half in Monday’s matchup – they outscored the Spurs there only 48-46.

The Spurs outrebounded Cleveland 52-47, and won the second-chance battle 17-15.

Give the Cavaliers credit. With the paint more of a no-fly zone Monday, they found another way to win the game.
