San Antonio Spurs forward Victor Wembanyama (1) shoots against New York Knicks center Karl-Anthony Towns (32) during the first half of the NBA Cup championship basketball game Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2025, in Las Vegas.

LAS VEGAS – Victor Wembanyama played Tuesday night’s NBA Cup championship game with a heavy heart after learning earlier in the day his grandmother had died in France, a team source said.

An emotional Wembanyama cut his post-game news conference short following the Spurs’ 124-113 loss to the New York Knicks after informing reporters he “just lost somebody.”

Fighting back tears, the Spurs All-Star center took two questions at T-Mobile Arena before exiting the podium.

Wembanyama scored 18 points in 25 minutes off the bench in the game, which marked just his second outing after he missed 12 games in a row with an injured calf.

After taking a question in French from a reporter from France, Wembanyama said, “Sorry. I just lost somebody today. I’ll take one more question.”

Asked how the Spurs would grow from the loss, he said, “I guess this is the best practice for important games because … our focus is already on the playoffs. The playoffs are going to be the the biggest time of year. So I guess it’s good that we have this experience today.”

Wembanyama left the room alongside a Spurs staffer after that response.

The game marked Wembanyama’s second outing after he missed 12 games in a row due to a calf injury.
