Spurs star Victor Wembanyama had a book by his favorite author on hand during the recent Emirates NBA Cup conclusion in Las Vegas.
Spurs star Victor Wembanyama’s determination to fight through grief during the 124-113 loss to New York in the NBA Cup championship game Tuesday night in Las Vegas left his coach proud of the 21-year-old Frenchman.
Playing just 25 minutes due to a minutes restriction in just his second game back after missing 12 in a row with a calf injury, Wembanyama had 18 points, six rebounds and two blocks after learning earlier in the day his grandmother had died in France.
Fighting back tears, Wembanyama cut his postgame media session short after telling reporters he had suffered a personal loss.
“The emotion he showed or lack thereof during the game is typically the human response of when you’re trying to be poised and composed while you’re going through something, I think, that we’ve all experienced in our lives,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said before Thursday night’s 119-94 victory over Washington.
“I don’t want to speak for him, but I know typically when you get through those experiences and you’re able to catch a breath and probably actually internalize what’s going on, it can be a lot. Good, bad, it’s usually emotional either way. And so I am just proud of him that he got through it. I was happy he felt comfortable enough with our group to share it, and that we would honor him and be a part of that moment with him.”
The Spurs wanted to take home the NBA Cup to a city that has gone six years without seeing the Spurs in the playoffs, and Wembanyama gave it his best shot despite experiencing the pain of losing a loved one.
“It’s tough,” Johnson said. "Life, unfortunately, doesn’t get to be put on hold, and we don’t get to determine our work schedules around that. So, sometimes we have to (decide), whether it’s pick one or juggle them both. And I think that’s where you have teams and groups come together. It helps in those moments because we all go through things and have tough days.
“So it was just a moment that hopefully he felt supported because it obviously was not easy for him.”
Wembanyama did not meet with reporters after coming off the bench Thursday night to score 13 of his 15 points in the second half against the Wizards to help the Spurs win their fourth in a row and improve to 19-7. When he entered the game, the sellout crowd of 18,754 at the Frost Bank Center erupted in applause while the Jackals, the raucous group of supporters founded by the All-Star center, chanted, “Wembanyama, Wembanyama.”
Thursday’s game marked the first of a back-to-back for the Spurs that ended in Atlanta on Friday night. It’s the first back-to-back Wembanyama has faced since returning from the calf injury that sidelined him for nearly a month.
Wembanyama also had eight rebounds, four assists and four blocks in 17 minutes against Washington after entering the game early in the second period. He is only the second player in NBA history to post 15/8/4/4 in under 20 minutes, according to the Spurs. Herb Williams did it in 13 minutes in 1983, per the Spurs.
Wembanyama also came off the bench in the Spurs’ win over Oklahoma City in the NBA Cup semifinals last Saturday and in the loss to the Knicks.
Wembanyama averaged 34.6 minutes per game in his 12 outings before he hurt his calf. Since returning, he logged 21 against the Thunder before notching 25 against the Knicks in a game that counted neither in the standings nor statistically.
