LAS VEGAS — Victor Wembanyama fought through adversity in Tuesday night’s NBA Cup final after learning earlier in the day his grandmother had died in France, a team source said.

Wembanyama cut his postgame media session short following the Spurs’ 124-113 loss to the New York Knicks after informing reporters he was in mourning.

Fighting back tears, the 21-year-old All-Star center took two questions at T-Mobile Arena before leaving the podium.

Despite playing with a heavy heart, Wembanyama scored 18 points in 25 restricted minutes off the bench, which marked just his second outing after he missed 12 games in a row with an injured calf.

After answering a question in French from a reporter from France, Wembanyama said, “Sorry. I just lost somebody today. I’ll take one more question.”

Asked how the Spurs would grow from the loss, he said, “I guess this is the best practice for important games because … our focus is already on the playoffs. The playoffs are going to be the the biggest time of year. So I guess it’s good that we have this experience today.”

Wembanyama left the room alongside a Spurs staffer after that response.

OG Anunoby scored a game-high 28 points, Jalen Brunson had 25 points, eight assists and two blocks to win MVP honors, and the Knicks broke open what had been a tight game by outscoring the Spurs 35-19 in the fourth quarter to claim their first title in the NBA’s in-season tournament.

“It’s a goal of ours that we get to check off,” Brunson said. “It’s an important steppingstone for us.”

Rookie Dylan Harper led the Spurs with 21 points off the bench on the strength of 5 of 7 from 3-point range. De’Aaron Fox and Stephon Castle finished with 16 and 15 points, respectively.

Castle also had 12 assists and only two turnovers.

After trailing by 11 points late in the third quarter, the Knicks went ahead 97-94 with an 8-0 run to start the fourth quarter and stayed ahead for the remainder of the game.

Brunson started the run with a 3-pointer, and Jordan Clarkson capped it with consecutive baskets from beyond the arc. After a Spurs timeout, the run continued to 11-1, giving New York a 100-95 cushion.

Karl-Anthony Towns chipped in 16 points for the Knicks. Clarkson, a former San Antonio prep star who graduated from Wagner, scored eight of his 15 points off the bench in the fourth quarter.

The Knicks outrebounded the Spurs 59-42 with Mitchell Robinson grabbing a game-high 15 boards, including 10 on the offensive end. Wembanyama had six rebounds and two blocks to go along with his 18 points.

Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said his young team gained a lot from the two games it played in Las Vegas, a run that included upsetting league-leading Oklahoma City, the defending NBA champion, in the semifinals on Saturday, was a valuable experience.

Wembanyama had 22 points in 21 minutes against the Thunder after sitting out the entire first quarter.

“Playing really competitive games against really, really good teams, seasoned, experienced teams that have been in similar situations, to be able to feel those games, work those games, be in the moment in those games, I think is a valuable experience,” Johnson said.

That was certainly the case for Harper, who the Spurs selected second overall in the 2025 NBA draft last June.

“It was an unbelievable experience to be a part of this,” the 19-year-old New Jersey native said. “I’m three months into the NBA, and I get to go do things like this with a great group of guys. It got away from us in the fourth quarter, but overall, we’re going to take a lot from it and we’re going to apply it to next time.”

The game didn’t count in the standings. Both teams will resume the regular season later this week with 18-7 records.

For the Spurs, their run in the NBA Cup, which including downing the Lakers last week during the quarterfinals in Los Angeles, gives them confidence they will be able to end their six-season playoff drought, the longest in franchise history.

“I feel like the sky’s the limit,” Keldon Johnson said. “I feel like we just got to continue to build, continue all the good habits and continue to lean on one another in tough moments. And I feel like we’ll continue to do that. I feel like we have great vets on the team, and I feel like we are in a really good spot. I feel like once we hit our stride with everybody, we’re going to be in even better shape.”
