DENVER – Dylan Harper figured Wednesday in Portland would probably be a good day even before the Spurs tipped off against the Trail Blazers at the Moda Center.
He was right.
Playing in his first NBA action in 24 days, Harper was happy simply to be in uniform for the Spurs’ 115-102 victory over the Blazers.
“It felt good out there just to get back with the guys,” Harper said. “Most importantly, we got the win so I’m happy.”
Harper had not played since suffering a left calf strain in a Nov. 2 loss at Phoenix, an injury that cost him 10 games.
The NBA’s No. 2 overall draft pick did not return with a vengeance, per se, scoring seven points on 2-of-8 shooting in 16 ½ minutes at Portland.
The fact that he was able to return at all was comfort enough to the Spurs.
“When it happened,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said of Harper’s injury, “I did not like how it looked.”
Harper acknowledged the worst, saying he initially feared the worst – an Achilles tendon injury – as he limped off the court at the Mortgage Matchup Center 3 ½ weeks ago.
An MRI taken the following day revealed a calf strain and calmed everybody’s nerves.
Now that he is back on the floor, the next step will be for Harper to reclaim the form that ranked him among the NBA’s top rookies through the first six games of the season.
“I think he was fried in those 16 minutes,” Johnson said. “He’s trying to get his fitness level back to where it was. He’s going to be fantastic. His approach is great. We’ve just got to keep getting him in shape.”
Harper agreed, saying it will take a while for him to regain his explosion and his rhythm.
With his shot not falling, Harper did his best to contribute in other ways Wednesday, grabbing three offensive rebounds, dishing two assists and swiping a pair of steals.
His next chance to make strides comes Friday in Denver, when the Spurs face a winner-take-all game in NBA Emirates Cup group play at Ball Arena.
“It’s hard after missing a month to come back and be yourself (immediately),” Harper said. “It ain’t going to be 100%, but it’s good enough that I can push through games.”
Wembanyama, Castle remain in San Antonio
Though the Spurs got Harper off the injured list Wednesday, they will remain shorthanded heading to Denver.
All-Star center Victor Wembanyama (calf strain), starting guard Stephon Castle (left hip flexor strain) and backup guard Jordan McLaughlin (right hamstring strain) are not traveling with the Spurs on the four-game road trip that began Sunday in Phoenix.
The Spurs are 4-1 in the games Wembanyama has missed and 3-1 without him and Castle.
Portland’s Splitter owes debt to Popovich
Portland coach Tiago Splitter acknowledged Wednesday’s game against the Spurs was special for him.
As a player, Splitter spent his first five NBA seasons in San Antonio, and was the starting center on the club’s 2014 championship squad.
“There is something about it,” Splitter said. “I played there and had so many good moments in the peak of my basketball career as a player. Of course it’s different.”
Now 40, Splitter was installed as the Trail Blazers’ interim coach after Chauncey Billups was suspended in October amid an arrest and illegal gambling allegations.
Thrust into his first NBA head coaching job in conventional fashion, Splitter said he leaned heavily on lessons learned by playing for Hall of Fame coach Gregg Popovich in San Antonio.
“Pop taught me a lot of things – how to deal with people and how to lead a team and how to approach the everyday,” Splitter said. “I have vivid memories of him and how he coached me. Of course I’m different. Everyone has their own style. But there’s things you can pick from every coach you play for.”
