How Spurs’ Dylan Harper is ramping up fitness after return

ORLANDO, Fla. — When Dylan Harper returned to San Antonio’s lineup for 16 ½ minutes in a win at Portland on Nov. 26, coach Mitch Johnson could see the rookie was “fried.”

Having missed 10 games across a 24-day stretch due to a left calf strain, Harper needed some time to regain his normal level of conditioning. And though Harper has shown plenty of promising flashes in his five games back in the rotation, Johnson said the process of returning to full strength is still ongoing.

"It does take probably longer than you think. It’s amazing the fitness level and shape you can be in, and how fast it can go,” Johnson said. “It’s still going to take time. He’s not ready to go play 30-plus minutes, and just the brand of basketball that we’re demanding from him on both ends, it’s a lot of output of energy. He’s trending and growing the right way, but it’s going to take some time to really get there.”

Harper said he already feels prepared and confident in critical moments, scoring 10 points with four rebounds and a steal in the fourth quarter of San Antonio’s 114-112 win at Orlando on Wednesday.

Finding his wind again, though, remains a work in progress.

“Definitely. I think that’s probably the hardest thing getting back after injury, getting in shape,” Harper said. “But game by game, you just feel how much better it’s getting.”

The No. 2 overall pick in this year’s draft, Harper turned heads in his first six games with the Spurs, averaging 14 points, four rebounds and 3.8 assists off the bench. Removing the matchup against Phoenix on Nov. 2 that was cut short by the injury, Harper averaged 26 minutes per game through that initial stint.

In five games since returning to action, Harper is averaging 19 minutes per game, notching 13.2 points, 1.8 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game.

“I think he’s done a great job,” Johnson said. “It’s been good just to get him back on the court and start building the continuity and the on-the-job training, because there’s no way to replicate that, really, even though we try as much as we can.”
