Inside Stephon Castle’s recent assists binge

San Antonio Spurs guard Stephon Castle (5) dunks a ball during the second half of an NBA game with New Orleans in San Antonio, Saturday, Nov. 8, 2025. The Spurs beat the Pelicans 126-119.

CHICAGO – For a moment – or several moments actually – Stephon Castle’s entire world turned upside down.

Literally.

Chasing down a loose rebound in the first half of the Spurs’ 126-119 win over New Orleans on Saturday, Castle ended up falling head over heels over the scorer’s table, landing on his back behind the front row of fans.

“I didn’t see anything else after that,” Castle said.

It took a small army of arena staffers to untangle the second-year guard, whose attempt to save the rebound ended up in the Pelicans’ hands. With Castle out of the action, the Pelicans spent 15 seconds playing 4-on-5 before Trey Murphy scored and the Spurs could call timeout.

As far as playmaking was concerned, that was about all that went wrong Saturday for Castle, who matched a career best with 14 assists.

That came a night after Castle doled out 13 assists in the Spurs’ NBA Emirates Cup game victory over Houston.

“I’m just trying to make the easy plays,” the 20-year-old Castle said. “I feel like when I get to the paint I try to make the easy play, and then credit to those guys for knocking down shots.”

Spurs coach Mitch Johnson uses a baseball analogy to explain Castle’s recent assists binge.

“I think he’s hitting a lot of singles,” Johnson said. “I think he’s always been able to make really advanced plays and reads and dynamic athleticism. He’s hitting a lot of singles right now and when he does that, it’s hard to guard him.”

Castle has made a living lately making the simple look sensational.

His recent spate of handouts has helped the Spurs set season highs in assists in back-to-back games, with 30 against the Rockets and 31 against

“I think that’s just with learning and understanding the game,” All-Star guard De’Aaron Fox said. “Whenever you play your first year, obviously most of the time things are moving fast, guys are longer, guys are more athletic. But as the game continues to slow down for you as you’re growing, as you play more games, you see the simple things.”

Having a 7-foot-4 unicorn to throw the ball to helps.

Four of Castle’s assists Saturday came on alley-oop lobs. Three of those went to Victor Wembanyama, the other to Julian Champagnie.

“The longer I play, I feel like teams see what kind of passes that I’ve been trying to make,” said Castle, whose previous 14-assist game came in a March 21 victory over Philadelphia. “Coach Mitch let me know guys are reading that when I have the ball. So just being able to make the right play and the simple play has been working for me.”

Champagnie solid in return to bench

The return of All-Star guard De’Aaron Fox from the injured list caused Johnson to reconfigure his starting lineup against New Orleans.

Julian Champagnie was the odd man out.

The 24-year-old forward came off the bench for the first time this season and led all Spurs reserves with 14 points.

Champagnie mostly came off the bench last season. As such, Johnson was not surprised by his seamless return to that role.

“He has done a little bit of everything over time,” Johnson said. “Those guys are professionals. We have different groups starting and different groups finishing and everything in between. We’ve just got to keep our energy together towards the same goal.”

A Spurs reunion set for Chicago

Monday’s game at Chicago will mark the first meeting between the Spurs and Bulls since the February trade that brought Fox from Sacramento to San Antonio.

As part of that deal, the Spurs sent point guard Tre Jones and big man Zach Collins to Chicago.

“They’re on the long list of people since I’ve been around that have been helping build the foundation (with the Spurs),” Johnson said. “They were the types of people that we are always looking to add, and two guys I really enjoy seeing.”

Collins is on the shelf after undergoing surgery for a fractured left wrist suffered during a preseason game.

Jones has been a key cog in Chicago’s surprising 6-3 start, starting all nine games and averaging 12.8 points, 5.3 assists and a pair of steals.

“I’m happy he’s able to find another home and he’s able to excel in his role,” said Spurs guard Devin Vassell, who was drafted the same year as Jones in 2020. “He’s been playing great. That team is playing great too, so I’m excited to go out there.”
