3 Takeaways as Dylan Harper saves Spurs in home opener

Image
San Antonio Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama (1) chest bumps his teammate Keldon Johnson (3) as the starting line up is announced for the home opener against the Brooklyn Nets at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Sunday, Oct. 26, 2025.

As Brooklyn Nets coach Jordi Fernandez sat down to watch film of Victor Wembanyama this week, there were two wolves inside of him.

One was the frightened coach whose unenviable job it was to figure out how to stop the NBA’s most irresistible force.

The other was the pure basketball fan in Fernandez.

“It’s just fun to watch him,” Fernandez said.

Wembanyama put on another show in the Sunday’s 118-107 win over the Nets in the Spurs’ home-opener at the Frost Bank Center.

But it didn’t seem to be all that much fun for the basketball coach in Fernandez.

Wembanyama against stacked the box score with 31 points, 14 rebounds and six blocks.

It was a 19-year-old rookie, however, who ultimately saved the Spurs’ day.

Playing in his first regular-season game at the Frost Bank Center, Dylan Harper scored 20 points off the bench, added a team-high eight assists, grabbed five rebounds and committed no turnovers.

The Spurs had squandered a 26-point lead and trailed by five points in the fourth quarter when Harper came to their rescue.

First he Euro-stepped past Brooklyn’s Egor Demin for a 3-point play. Then he faked Noah Clowney out of his shoes for a layup on the Spurs’ next possession. On the following, trip, Harper dug a loose ball out of the paint to find Wembanyama for a 3-pointer.

By the time Harper’s flurry was over, the Spurs led 107-97. They never trailed again.

The victory improved the Spurs to 3-0 for the first time since 2019-20. Despite 40 points from Cam Thomas, Brooklyn remained winless at 0-3 to start the season.

For Wembanyama, who missed the final two months of last season with a blood clot in his right shoulder, Sunday’s game marked his first regular-season appearance at the Frost Bank Center since Jan. 31.

Having totaled 69 points, 26 rebounds and 12 blocks in the Spurs’ first two victories this season, Wembanyama started slowly against the Nets, going without a field goal in the first quarter.

Eventually, predictably, Wembanyama went wild again. And once again, the Spurs won.

Image
San Antonio Spurs forward Victor Wembanyama (1) hands on the rim after making a dunk over the Brooklyn Nets during the first half of the home opener at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Sunday, Oct. 26, 2025.

Here are three takeaways from Sunday’s victory, as the Spurs look forward to making it four in a row Monday at home against Toronto:

1. Harper lit the Spurs’ spark

The Spurs struggled out of the gate offensively, flummoxed by the Nets’ pressure defense.

Four of the Spurs’ first six possessions ended in turnovers, two apiece from Stephon Castle and Harrison Barnes.

The Castle turnovers were particularly alarming, considering he committed 10 in the Spurs’ overtime win at New Orleans on Wednesday.

Enter Harper, whose speed and craftiness with the ball seemed to unlock everything.

With the 19-year-old rookie at the controls, the turnovers stopped at the ball got moving.

Harper had five assists in the first quarter, and a Spurs’ offense that opened the game stuck in the mud was off and running.

2. No Kornet, no problem (for now)

The Spurs re-signed veteran big man Bismack Biyombo over the offseason to provide an emergency option for the Spurs’ front court.

Sunday certainly qualified.

With backup big man Luke Kornet sidelined by a sore ankle, the Spurs had to lean on the 33-year-old Biyombo against the Nets.

Those minutes didn’t go well for Biyombo. It didn’t matter against Brooklyn, who didn’t have the firepower to handle everyone else the Spurs threw at them, but could matter going forward.

Kornet has been a seminal presence for the Spurs in the early throes of the season, playing both behind and alongside Wembanyama.

The good news is, the Spurs do not believe Kornet’s injury to be a long-term one. He could be back as soon as Monday against Toronto.

3. Pop’s presence hangs over season-opener, quietly

Sunday’s game was the Spurs’ first home opener without Gregg Popovich as head coach since 1997.

The team marked the occasion by unveiling a new banner in the rafters commemorating Popovich, the five championships the Spurs won on his watch and the NBA-record 1,390 victories he accrued.

Well, “unveiled” might be a strong word.

In true Popovichian fashion, the banner had already been hung before fans arrived at the Frost Bank Center.

There was no ceremony, no pomp, no circumstance. Not even an announcement that the banner had been raised.

Earlier that morning, Popovich took out an ad printed in the Express News thanking Spurs fans plus myriad players and staffers who he said made his 29 seasons special.

“Everything you see here or have heard regarding this organization, he has his imprints all over it,” coach Mitch Johnson said.
