How Dylan Harper came to the Spurs’ rescue against Brooklyn

A 26-point lead had become a five-point deficit in the fourth quarter Sunday, leaving the Spurs dangerously close to frittering away their home opener against the Brooklyn Nets.

Victor Wembanyama has one word for what happened next.

“Dylan,” Wembanyama said.

That would be rookie guard Dylan Harper. That would be the youngest player on the Spurs’ roster.

That would be the man who saved their bacon Sunday.

In only his third NBA game, Harper scored 20 points with a team-best eight assists off the bench to help the Spurs salvage a 118-107 victory over the Nets.

Watching from the bench as things went awry Friday, Harper’s mindset once he entered the game befitted a seasoned veteran.

“Just make an impact,” said Harper, who hoped to bring a similar juice to Monday’s game against Toronto. “Just give my team that kind of push and that kind of energy that we needed.”

Wembanyama stuffed the stat sheet in Wembanyama fashion, with 31 points, 14 rebounds and six blocks. Keldon Johnson provided 19 points and a heaping helping off hustle off the bench.

It was Harper – a teenager who at this time a year ago had yet to make even his college debut – who guided the Spurs through some of the game’s most critical moments.

“He’s making all the right plays,” Keldon Johnson said. “When we had that little slump in the second half, he came in and bought that spark.”

After rolling through the first 2 1/2 quarters, the Spurs trailed 97-95 with 7:29 to play. A sold-out crowd of 19,016 was suddenly steeled to have its Sunday afternoon spoiled.

Enter Harper, who made plays on three consecutive possessions to pull the Spurs out of the fire.

First, he slipped past Brooklyn rookie Egor Demin for an and-1 layup to put the Spurs on top by one.

On the next possession, he took a deep pass from Wembanyama then faked Noah Clowney out of his shoes on his way to another layup.

On the Spurs’ next trip, Harper dug out a loose ball after a Harrison Barnes misfire and found Wembanyama for a 3-pointer.

After that flurry, the Spurs were up 103-97. They would never trail again on the way to their first 3-0 start to a season since 2019-20.

“I feel like he’s imposing his will once he gets in the game,” Johnson said of Harper. “I like that he’s not passive. He’s going out there and being himself.”

This is the kind of impact the Spurs envisioned from Harper when they selected him No. 2 overall in June. They just did not expect it to come so quickly.

Last week, Harper opened his NBA career in the Spurs’ road win in Dallas.

He acknowledged he felt jitters before the game, a fact tevident in his wide-eyed and shaky start to that contest.

That version of Harper was nowhere to be seen Sunday.

The Spurs began the game overwhelmed by Brooklyn’s pressure defense, committing four turnovers on the first six possessions.

It took a teenager to come in and calm things down.

The rookie jitters are gone.

“It’s just basketball at this point,” Harper said. “I mean, just going out there, just playing my game, just trusting my ability and being someone where I can do whatever the team needs me to do.”

Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said Harper was even better than his box score against Brooklyn.

“I think his offense was really good and obviously his stat line will represent that,” Johnson said. “But I thought his defense was better than his offense.”

Harper will get better on both ends, and there’s one word for that, too.

Scary.

“He went out there and changed the game,” Keldon Johnson said. “That’s big time especially seeing that from a rookie. I feel like the confidence and swagger that he has definitely something special.”
