Teammates, coach heap praise on Keldon Johnson after Spurs’ win

San Antonio Spurs forward Keldon Johnson (3) drives past Brooklyn Nets forward Ziaire Williams (1) during the first quarter of the Spurs’ home opener at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Sunday, Oct. 26, 2025. The Spurs defeated the Nets, 118-107.
With Keldon Johnson sitting next to him at the podium after the Spurs’ 118-107 win over Brooklyn on Sunday, Victor Wembanyama decided to use the team’s longest-tenured player as a comic foil.
Asked a long question in French by a reporter from his homeland, Wembanyama turned to Johnson and said, “Keldon?”
The joke drew laughter from the media, but the Spurs were serious when talking about the impact Johnson’s play had in their home opener.
“Keldon right now is impacting winning more than he ever has, and it’s really, really cool to see, especially because a lot of times it hasn’t started with scoring,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said.
In 29 minutes off the bench, Keldon Johnson produced 19 points, seven rebounds (three on the offensive end), one assist and one steal in a hard-nosed performance that delighted the sellout crowd of 19,016 at the Frost Bank Center.
“He’s creating his own luck and getting rewarded for that as he should,” Mitch Johnson said. “It’s something that we all need to continue to get better at.”
Wembanyama said the Spurs, who improved to 3-0 for the first time since the 2019-20 season, need to produce a “mix tape” featuring all of Keldon Johnson’s rebounds, including ripping one down after the Nets’ Terance Mann missed a 3-point shot with 1:15 left in the game and San Antonio nursing a 111-107 lead.
In the final 2:28 of the game, Johnson also had a reverse layup that gave the Spurs the 110-107 cushion and a lob pass to Wembanyama for a dunk that pushed the lead to 10 points with 35.6 seconds left.
“I love it,” Wembanyama said of Johnson’s all-around play. "And for me, it is just the product of him understanding a huge thing that often gets overlooked, a huge piece of how he can help us and him just totally buying in on it.
“So, total respect for him for this.”
Asked about all the praise heaped on him, Keldon Johnson said it all boils down to him “just playing my role.”
“I feel like I’m buying into what we have here in San Antonio, and I truly feel we could do something special here,” he said. "And I always say this before the season, whatever my job is, that’s what I got to do to help my team win. I feel like I’m just buying into that and I’m knowing and trusting my teammates and knowing that I’m doing my job just like Vic does his job and everybody else does their’s.
“So just really just buying into that role. And I mean it’s paying off and winning and winning is the most important thing to us.”
