Former Spur Tiago Splitter named Blazers interim coach amid FBI probe

Former Paris-Levallois coach Tiago Splitter, left, looks on during a Euroleague basketball game against Bayern Munich in Munich, Germany, Oct. 17, 2024. Splitter was named Portland Trail Blazers interim coach after Chauncey Billups was charged Thursday in connection with a sprawling gambling probe.
Former San Antonio Spurs center Tiago Splitter has been named interim coach for the Portland Trail Blazers after coach Chauncey Billups was charged Thursday amid an FBI probe into two separate gambling operations, the team said in a statement.
Federal authorities accused Billups of participating in a conspiracy to fix high-stakes card games tied to organized crime, and Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier was charged in connection with a separate operation exploiting private information about players to win bets on NBA games.
Splitter joined Billups’ staff in June following stints as a head coach in France’s top basketball league and as an assistant with the Houston Rockets.
The 6-foot-11 center was taken in the first round of the 2007 NBA draft by the Spurs and played five seasons with the team, including a key role on the squads that reached back-to-back NBA Finals in 2013 and 2014.
He averaged 8.3 points and 5.3 rebounds per game while with the Spurs from 2010-2015, helping them win the 2014 NBA title in five games over the Miami Heat.
The Spurs traded Splitter to the Atlanta Hawks in July 2015 in a move to create salary cap space for the team’s run at Trail Blazers free agent LaMarcus Aldridge. Splitter was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers in February 2017 and retired from the NBA in 2018 after a career spanning seven seasons.
Splitter now takes the reins in place of Billups, who was entering his fifth season with Portland and looking for his first playoff appearance with the team.
