How Tiago Splitter is emulating Spurs’ Gregg Popovich in Portland

Tiago Splitter took a big page out of Gregg Popovich’s coaching playbook this season in establishing a people-first culture in Portland.

Splitter played for the Spurs for five seasons from 2010 through 2015. During that time, he kept a close eye on how Popovich treated his players.

Ten years after his final season in San Antonio, Splitter worked hard this season to form a Spurs-like culture with the Trail Blazers after he was promoted from assistant coach to acting head coach following Chauncey Billups’ arrest in October for his alleged role in poker games the FBI said were rigged by the mob.

“The way he treats people makes you feel like you are part of a family,” Splitter said of Popovich, who retired from coaching last May as the NBA’s all-time winningest coach after leading the Spurs to five NBA titles and six trips to the Finals in 29 seasons.

Splitter’s comments came during media availability Thursday in Portland in advance of the Blazers’ first-round playoff series with the Spurs.

Game 1 is set for 8 p.m. Sunday at the Frost Bank Center.

“That’s really what I am trying to do here," Splitter said of emulating Popovich’s inclusive atmosphere. "I have everybody involved. From one to 18 on the roster, everybody has to be part of this. I think that is what I learned most from him, the off-the-court stuff. The Xs and Ox, yeah, they are important. I think everybody does that in the league. But the relationship part with the players is what really, really separates Pop from all the coaches.”

Splitter helped the Spurs win their last NBA title in 2013-14. He averaged 8.3 points and 5.3 rebounds over 358 regular season games with San Antonio.

"I think there is a romantic feeling about it. But that’s it,” he said of facing his former team in the playoffs.

“At the end of the day, you’re going to go there, you’re going to compete and we want to beat them."

Despite his success in guiding the Blazers to a 42-40 record in the regular season and a 114-110 road win over Phoenix in the NBA Play-in Tournament on Tuesday night to push them into their best-of-seven series with the Spurs, Splitter’s future in Portland is uncertain.

Blazers owner Tom Dundon is actively exploring the coaching market, NBA insider Marc Stein has reported.

The San Antonio-Portland series features coaches with much in common in Splitter and the Spurs’ Mitch Johnson.

Both are young (Johnson 39, Splitter 41). Both learned a lot from Popovich (Johnson as a Spurs assistant, Splitter as a Spurs player). Both gained their present positions under challenging circumstances (Johnson after Popovich suffered a stroke, Splitter after Chauncey Billups was arrested as part of a sprawling FBI gambling investigation).

Both did impressive work after taking over (Johnson as acting coach last season, Splitter as interim coach this year).

“I think we went through everything you can imagine, right?” Splitter told reporters recently, sounding a lot like Johnson at the end of last season after he led the Spurs to a 34-48 record, a performance that prompted the Spurs to hire him as head coach after Popovich retired.

Splitter may not be as fortunate after the Blazers were sold in March to Dundon, who reportedly is exploring hiring a more experienced coach.

“I think Tiago’s crushed it,” Johnson said. “I think when you see their team, and they’ve had a lot of in and out and the rosters and lineups, the temperament that he’s had and being able to lead that team and just what they’ve done recently (it’s impressive). The way they finished and the way they’re playing is a testament to him and the way those guys are playing and fighting for him and each other.”
