Wembanyama returns as Spurs defeat Guangzhou Loong-Lions

Spurs rookie Carter Bryant couldn’t help but feel Guan Ziyu’s pain.

Early in the second quarter of Monday’s preseason opener. Ziyu – a 6-foot-7 forward from the opposing Guangzhou Loong-Lions, drove along the baseline toward a reverse layup.

In a moment of sheer inhospitality, Victor Wembanyama welcomed Ziyu to San Antonio by rejecting his shot off the backboard with such force it is a wonder the glass didn’t crack.

Watching this unfold, as the Spurs rolled to a 119-88 victory over the Chinese League team at the Frost Bank Center, Bryant suddenly felt a kinship with his counterpart from across the ocean.

“I think (Wembanyama) has done that to me a few times in practice,” Bryant said.

Playing in his first competitive game since a blood clot scare halted his second NBA season in February, Wembanyama made short work of the Lions in his 16 minutes and 23 seconds of work.

The 7-4 Frenchman finished with nine points, 10 rebounds, seven assists and three blocks, ran a couple of jumbo-sized pick-and-rolls with 7-2 new addition Luke Kornet, then took the second half off with the rest of the Spurs’ regulars.

Wembanyama also committed six turnovers – including five in the first quarter – a small sign of rust from the eight-month layoff from competitive basketball.

It wasn’t exactly Game 7. But for Wembanyama, Monday’s game marked an important milepost in resuming his career.

“We don’t have the intensity of the stakes, the high stakes games yet,” Wembanyama said. “But yeah, it feels great. It feels like I belong, you know what I mean?”

Kornet, Keldon Johnson and Julian Champagnie each scored 16 points apiece in the first half, which ended with the Spurs on top 79-47.

Bryant added 15 points off the bench.

Wembanyama and Kornet combined to go 9 of 9 from the field.

“We’re each trying to find our piece of the puzzle, and mine happens to be pretty big,” Wembanyama said. “It’s a lot to take care of, but there’s no better time than now.”

The Spurs played the game short-handed with a handful of would-be regulars out nursing various levels of bumps and bruises.

All in all, they got what they needed in an exhibition opener against a Guangzhou club that featured a halndful of ex-NBA players, including Frank Kaminsky (22 points), Victor Oladipo (20 points) and San Antonio Warren alum George King.

Next comes a level up in competition, when the Spurs travel to Miami for their second preseason game on Wednesday.

Here are three takeaways from Wembanyama’s triumphant return to the Frost Bank Center on Monday:

1) Wemby wows with fundamentals

Even in a short cameo, Wembanyama provided no shortage of what coach Mitch Johnson called “wow moments” Monday.

There was the aforementioned rejection of Ziyu. A follow slam dunk in the first quarter. One of the handful of passes he zipped to Kornet for easy baskets while serving as the world’s tallest pick-and-roll initiator.

Johnson’s favorite play, however, came in the second quarter when Wembanyama turned down a 3-point shot, pumped fake past his defender, then used a textbook two-handed chest pass to deliver the ball to Champagnie for a wide-open 3-pointer of his own.

“He hit the guy with a strike, right on a target and the guy made the shot,” Johnson said. “That, at his size, is a wow moment.”

Johnson has been preaching for Wembanyama to lean on fundamentals, even though he can do things no other human can on the basketball court.

This was a prime example.

“Maybe I turned down a shot I could make with my eyes closed,” Wembanyama said. “But that was to get one of my teammates a shot he could make in his sleep.”

The Spurs call this principle “good to great.” Wembanyama demonstrated it to a T.

All told, he took only one 3-point attempt Monday – and made it.

“It’s not because you can make a shot that you have to take it,” Wembanyama said. As a team we have to find the best option. … I can take a contested fadeaway with 21 seconds on the clock or two seconds. It doesn’t make a difference. We have 24 seconds to find the best solution. That’s what we’re trying to do.”

2) Spurs finding 3-point options

One game not even against NBA competition is too small a sample size to say the Spurs have solved their 3-point shooting woes from last season.

They shot it well Monday, though.

The Spurs hit 15 of 38 from beyond the arc against the Lions, including a 4-of-7 day from Champagnie and a 3-of-5 showing from newcomer Lindy Waters III.

Though Waters, formerly of Oklahoma City, Golden State and Detroit, does not project as an every-night rotation staple, he gives Johnson an extra 3-point shooter in his tool kit. He made 43.5% of his 3-point tries in 38 games with the Thunder in 2023-24.

“I think I bring shooting gravity to the table,” Waters said. “I can space the floor, I play hard. I’ll do whatever it takes for the team to win.”

3) Rookie’s hops turning heads

Wembanyama had high praise for Carter in his first NBA preseason game, particularly at the defensive end.

Carter’s athleticism has been the talk of Spurs’ camp so far.

“He’s very impressive, the shots he manages to contest,” Wembanyama said of the 14th overall pick from Arizona. “I knew he could jump high, but I didn’t know he would be jumping this high. He can be a huge presence.”
