Spurs coach Mitch Johnson confident in decision to sit Stephon Castle

San Antonio Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson, left, yells out instructions during the preseason-opening 119-98 win over the Guangzhou Loong-Lions on Monday, Oct. 6, 2025 at the Frost Bank Center.

MIAMI – Spurs coach Mitch Johnson didn’t have to think twice about whether to hold Stephon Castle out of the preseason opener after the second-year guard left Saturday’s Silver & Black Open Scrimmage with a bruised right knee.

Although Castle’s injury isn’t considered serious and his absence left the Spurs without a point guard because De’Aaron Fox and Jordan McLaughlin were also sidelined with injured hamstrings, Johnson wasn’t about to take any chances with the 2024-25 NBA Rookie of the Year.

The Spurs open the regular season on Oct. 22 at Dallas, and Johnson wants Castle at 100% by then.

“He’s had a heck of a preseason and leading up to it, so he’s not someone I was trying to see a bunch of in the preseason anyway,” Johnson said. “I’d rather have him get healthy.”

The Spurs rolled to an easy 119-88 win over China’s Guangzhou Loong-Lions on Monday while Castle and several other players watched in street clothes.

Castle likely will also miss Wednesday’s game against the Heat and Friday’s home outing against Utah.

“He’s feeling better, which is positive,” Johnson said. “We’ll just kind of see how the thing continues to heal and get better. But I don’t think it’s anything long term. Just got to get him right.”

With Castle, Fox and McLaughlin sidelined, Johnson started 6-foot-6 shooting guard Lindy Waters III at point guard. In 20 minutes, Waters finished with nine points on 3 of 5 from 3-point range, four rebounds and three assists without a turnover.

“Hard-nosed, no nonsense, competitive, and makes the right decisions a lot,” Johnson said of Waters, a fifth-year pro who signed with the Spurs on a one-year deal in July. “There’s a lot to like.”

The Spurs also played Monday without rookie Dylan Harper (thumb), Jeremy Sochan (calf), Kelly Olynyk (heel) and Devin Vassell (rest).

Vassell is expected to suit up against Miami.

“We’re missing a few, but we’ve competed and we’ve asked a lot of them physically in this first week of camp,” Johnson said. “And so bumps and bruises come with that.”

Johnson made no excuses for pushing the players hard last week.

“We wanted to set an identity and a precedent and a standard of a competitive level of intensity and how fast we want to play,” Johnson said. “And when you mix in the competitiveness and how fast you’re going to play, you’re going to have some physicality.”

Brennan-ex enjoys traveling the world

San Antonio’s George King could become a travel agent after his pro basketball career ends. In fact, he’s already sort of serving as one.

"Derrick White, he my college teammate at Colorado, told me this summer, ‘Man, I’m thinking about where I want to take the family for vacation. I may reach out to you for some recommendations,’ " King said. “I was like, I can give you some places, brother. I really can, for sure.”

King, a 6-foot-6 forward and 2013 Brennan graduate who led the Bears to the Class 4A state semifinals as a senior, had four points in 18 minutes off the bench for the Loong-Lions against his hometown Spurs.

China is King’s latest stop in an impressive globe-trotting journey that has seen him collect paychecks in five continents (Africa, Australia, Asia, Europe and North America) and 10 countries (Australia, China, Egypt, Germany, Israel, Italy, Lebanon, Philippines, Poland and the United States).

In the U.S., he’s had NBA stops in Dallas, Los Angeles (Clippers) and Portland.

“I am comfortable with saying I have been around the world,” King, 31, said. “The only place I haven’t been to yet, and who knows what God has in store for me, is South America.”

So far, Australia ranks as his favorite stop, followed by Manila and Egypt.

Asked why Australia ranked first, King said, “How clean it is and the basketball league has a players union. They took care of us. I loved the food when I played in Wollongone (New South Wales) for the Illawarra Hawks, where JaVale McGee is currently playing. It’s a beautiful beach town, where whales are known to roam. We could run out there into the water from where we practiced and the water was cold enough to where we could kind of recover. It was great. Take our shirts off, our shoes off and run out there on the beach.”

“Never did I think that I would play overseas. I always thought that my career would be in the NBA only. But you know what? That just goes to show the work that God can do within you. I love it. And I’m excited to go to China. I’m bringing my family and I’m excited to show them what I’ve been experiencing for the last eight years because it’s my first time bringing my family with me.”
