Red McCombs reveal Community Court at HemisFair Plaza

Per Spurs press release:

The San Antonio Spurs, McCombs family and Hemisfair officially opened the Red McCombs Community Court at Tower Park, marking the first publicly accessible basketball court in downtown San Antonio’s Hemisfair district. This court is a culmination of the Spurs and McCombs family’s shared vision for a thriving and vibrant downtown, and a symbol of their shared love for San Antonio and its people. It also continues the more than 50-year legacy the Spurs have of investing in the San Antonio community.

George Gervin, David Robinson, Victor Wembanyama and Keldon Johnson, and team executives joined the McCombs family for the opening ceremony.

Spurs Sports Academy wasted to time breaking in the new court as they hosted a youth basketball clinic giving the youngsters the first opportunity to play.

Peter J. Holt, Chairman and Managing Partner of Spurs Sports & Entertainment shared,

“This court represents the past, present and future of San Antonio basketball and the city we call home. From Hemisfair Arena where we first played, to the McCombs family’s enduring impact, to this new space for future generations, today we honor history while investing in our city’s future – continuing a legacy begun by Red McCombs.”

The $1.8 million project was funded through leadership gifts from the McCombs Foundation and Spurs Give, with Hemisfair facilitating the development of the court and long-term operational support.

Marsha Shields, of the McCombs family stated,

“Red and Charline McCombs always found ways to make our city better. This legacy continues in the heart of the Hemisfair District with a festive public basketball court that celebrates the Spurs’ recent 50th anniversary and is a gathering place for youth, families, and community groups.”

Red McCombs was instrumental in relocating the Spurs to San Antonio in 1973.
