(ESPN’s Sports Humanitarian Team of the Year)。

NBA teaming with Spurs, other Texas teams to aid Hill Country
The Spurs are teaming with the NBA and its two other Texas franchises to assist the flood-ravaged Hill Country.
In a statement released Monday, the league said it would join the NBA Players Association, the Dallas Mavericks, the Houston Rockets and the Spurs to provide more than $2 million to “support immediate and long-term relief to those most impacted.”
Flash floods in Texas, including along the Guadalupe River, killed more than 100 people over the Fourth of July holiday weekend and left others still missing, including girls attending Camp Mystic, a riverside Christian camp in Hunt.
“The NBA family is heartbroken by the loss of life and the devastation caused by the flooding across the Texas Hill Country,” the NBA said. "Our thoughts are with all those affected by this tragedy and we extend our deepest gratitude to the heroic first responders and volunteers.
“Amid so much sorrow, we are inspired by the strength of the Texas community as it comes together during this incredibly difficult time.”
The financial commitment by the NBA, the union and the teams is similar to the relief efforts they mounted after the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde.
The Spurs were named ESPN’s Sports Humanitarian Team of the Year in 2023 during The ESPYs (Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly Award) for helping the Uvalde community heal after the tragedy that left 19 children and two teachers dead on May 24, 2022.
“The Spurs staff has volunteered more than 700 hours in Uvalde to date, distributed more than 1,500 free tickets, donated sports equipment to youth basketball teams and have raised more than $1 million in funds committed to uplifting and supporting the community for many years to come,” ESPN said in a statment.
The NBA isn’t the only sports league assisting the flood victims.
The NFL Foundation, the Dallas Cowboys and the Houston Texans are combining to contribute $1.5 million toward “immediate assistance and long-term recovery resources for Central Texas communities” impacted by the flash flooding that occurred on July 4, the NFL announced.
