As expected, the Spurs selected Rutgers guard Dylan Harper with the No. 2 overall pick Wednesday night at the 2025 NBA Draft.
The Spurs grabbed Harper, a dynamic 6-foot-6, 215-pound New Jersey native known best for his ability to get to the rim, after Dallas selected Duke forward Cooper Flagg first overall.
Harper told ESPN shortly after being selected that he’s looking forward to teaming with the last two winners of the Rookie of the Year Award, Victor Wembanyama (2023) and Stephon Castle (2024).
“I think when you play with a bunch of great players it brings out the best in you,” Harper said. “They have a great young core there. I’m just ready to get in there and make an impact.”
The Spurs are set to introduce Harper and any other players they draft to the San Antonio media at a news conference Saturday at the Victory Capital Performance Center.
“Welcome to the Spurs, Dylan Harper!!” franchise great Manu Ginobili wrote in a social media post. “Thrilled to have him in SA!”
The Spurs reportedly received a few offers from teams trying to pry the No. 2 pick away from them, but they deemed Harper too valuable a prospect to swap it.
“He’s got a rare confidence with humility,” Spurs general manager Brian Wright said. “He’s a very down-to-earth, simple kid, loves basketball, and after spending time with him throughout the process, you can tell that he knows he’s a good basketball player. But he wants to be part of a group, he wants to be part of a team, he’s willing to sacrifice, he’s willing to work for it, and the more we spend time with them, the more we felt confident in that.”
As a freshman this season, Harper averaged 19.4 points, 4.6 rebounds and 4.0 assists a game while shooting an impressive 48% from the floor. He’s also a skilled playmaker and a solid on-ball defender who can guard multiple positions.
But it’s his combination of size, strength and quickness that stands out the most and allows him to get into the paint and finish strong. It’s a skill set that has drawn comparisons to 6-6 Detroit guard Cade Cunningham, who made his first All-Star appearance last season in his fourth year.
Harper joins a crowded backcourt that already boasts explosive veteran De’Aaron Fox and Castle, but the Spurs are confident they can figure out a rotation that will allow each player to thrive while supporting Wembanyama, who is expected to be fully recovered by the start of training camp from the blood clot that ended his sophomore campaign in February shortly after he played in his first All-Star Game.
One concern, though, is that Harper, like Castle, isn’t an efficient 3-point threat, a negative for a team in need of consistent perimeter shooting to space the floor for the 7-foot-3 Wembanyama.
The Spurs, who finished 34-48 last season and missed the playoffs for a franchise-record sixth consecutive season, will be on the clock later tonight with the No. 14 overall pick. They traded their own second-round pick (No. 38 overall) to the Indiana Pacers shortly before the first round of the draft began.
