NEW YORK — The feeling hit Dylan Harper in the pit of his stomach and began what felt like an inexorable journey up his esophagus.

For one of the first times he could remember when it came to anything to do with basketball, the new Spurs rookie could barely contain his emotions Wednesday.

But contain them he did.

“I almost cried,” the 19-year-old Harper said after the Spurs made him the No. 2 pick in the 2025 NBA draft. “Every emotion you could possibly feel, I felt in that moment.”

Officially in the fold as part of the Spurs’ latest lottery bonanza, Harper will leave New York for a new home in South Texas this week overcome by a more familiar emotion – a determination to get down to work.

“I’m ready to get with that organization and get things rolling,” Harper said.

A 6-foot-6 left-handed guard with a Ginobili-esque ability to squirm his way to the rim, Harper was the most highly touted prospect in Wednesday’s first round outside of Duke superstar Cooper Flagg, who as expected went first overall to Dallas.

As the Mavericks celebrated their version of Flagg Day, the Spurs were popping metaphoric champagne at their own good fortune.

Harper, a former Rutgers standout, is the Spurs’ highest-drafted rookie not named David Robinson, Tim Duncan or Victor Wembanyama, all of whom went No. 1 in their respective drafts.

He was the headliner of a two-man first-round class the Spurs put together Wednesday at the Barclays Center. The club used the No. 14 pick, originally obtained from Atlanta in the 2022 Dejounte Murray trade, to select Arizona forward Carter Bryant.

The Spurs traded their pick in Thursday’s second round, No. 38 overall, to Indiana for a future second-rounder.

“We’re excited with the outcome,” Spurs general manager Brian Wright said. “I think we got two great young players to add to the group. It ended up being a great night for us.”

Harper is the clear-cut crown jewel of the Spurs’ crop.

He averaged 19.9 points in his lone season at Rutgers, converting 48% of his shots — including a nearly 70% success rate at the rim. An All-Big 10 selection, Harper totaled 576 points, a school record for a freshman.

Wednesday, he became the highest NBA draft pick in Rutgers history.

Once in San Antonio, Harper will join an overstuffed backcourt that includes All-Star De’Aaron Fox and reigning Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle.

That logjam does not fuss Harper, or his new bosses.

“Positions in this day and age don’t matter as much,” Wright said. “I’m not as concerned with positional overlap as trying to find skills and people that can put us in advantage situations, and he can definitely do that.”

Bryant, on the other hand, potentially brings to the Spurs’ roster a dimension they don’t already have.

At 6-foot-7, the 19-year-old Bryant is billed as a big, versatile and uber-athletic defender who hit nearly 40% from 3-point range at Arizona.

He remains something of a project, having averaged 6.5 points off the bench with the Wildcats.

Bryant said he left his pre-draft visit to San Antonio hoping the Spurs would take a chance on him. Not only did the Spurs yearn for Bryant, they tried in vain to trade up in Wednesday’s draft to ensure they got him.

When none of those talks panned out, Wright and the front-office group held its breath until the 14th pick arrived.

“It was a pleasant surprise he was there,” Wright said.

Bryant says he has patterned his 3-and-D game after former Spurs great Kawhi Leonard, a six-time All-Star.

Image

He comes by the comparison honestly. Bryant’s father, D’Cean, was an assistant coach at Martin Luther King High School in Riverside, Calif., when Leonard played there.

“I’m a guy who can bring energy, toughness, physicality,” Bryant said. “Someone who is just going to show up on a consistent basis and work his ass off.”

Drafted one spot ahead of where Leonard went in 2011, Bryant has his work cut out to reach Leonard’s level in the NBA.

Harper, meanwhile, has long been projected as a future star.

So coveted was Harper league-wide that the Spurs spent the month following the draft lottery consistently declining offers from other teams for the No. 2 pick.

“We listened to things as it came in,” Wright said, “but I think we were pretty locked in (on Harper).”

Even with his future in San Antonio all but cemented when he awoke Wednesday, Harper admits the run-up to the draft was “stressful” for him.

Having grown up in Franklin Lakes, N.J., and opting to remain in his home state for his lone college season, Harper said the uncertainty about what came next wore on him as draft night drew closer.

“You don’t really know where you’re going to live at,” Harper said. “I’ve been in Jersey my whole life. Being able to finally know where I’m going, it feels like a big weight is off my back.”

Though raised on opposite coasts, Harper and Bryant have been friendly rivals since their time on the AAU circuit as high school freshmen. They often spoke about playing together in college, but couldn’t quite make the logistics work.

Now the pair stands to be a part of an up-and-coming Spurs core that includes back-to-back NBA Rookie of the Year winners in Wembanyama and Castle.

If nothing else, the Spurs’ recent run of Wilt Chamberlain trophies gives Harper a bar at which to take aim.

“That’s definitely a goal of mine,” Harper said, “to make it three in a row.”

Forget Flagg. Carter is determined to give his new Spurs teammate a run for his money in the 2025-2026 Rookie of the Year race.

“One of us is going to get it,” Bryant said with a grin.

On a Wednesday night full of every kind of emotion for the two newest Spurs teenagers, there was room for one more.

Hello, unbridled optimism.
