Spurs general manager Brian Wright fields questions from the media at the Victory Capital Performance Center following the first round of the 2024 NBA Draft on Wednesday, June 26, 2024. NBA mock drafts overwhelmingly have Wright and the Spurs selecting Rutgers freshman guard Dylan Harper with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft on Wednesday.

NBA Draft experts certain Spurs select Dylan Harper with No. 2 pick
Rutgers guard Dylan Harper (2) shoots against Texas A&M guard Manny Obaseki (35) and Texas A&M forward Andersson Garcia (11) during the first half of an NCAA college basketball game Saturday, Nov. 30, 2024, in Las Vegas. Harper is widely considered to be the player the San Antonio Spurs select with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft on Wednesday.
There’s zero suspense when it comes to the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft.
And many prognosticators believe the second selection will have a predictable outcome as well.
Much like two years ago when the Spurs owned the first pick and Victor Wembanyama was the obvious choice, draftniks believe there shouldn’t be any debate as to which player they should select after Dallas makes the first pick Wednesday night.
It’s all but certain the Mavericks will select Duke forward Cooper Flagg. And most observers believe the second pick will be just as unsurprising.
Mock draft after mock draft has the Spurs selecting Rutgers guard Dylan Harper. While there are concerns of position overlap on a team that already boasts backcourt depth in the form of explosive veteran De’Aaron Fox and 2024-25 Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle, Harper’s high-ceiling potential is too good to pass up, the pundits reason.
“Most talent evaluators consider Harper to be in a tier of his own as the draft’s clear-cut second-best prospect, overriding potential concerns the Spurs might have about his imperfect backcourt fit with De’Aaron Fox and Stephon Castle, due to a distinct lack of perimeter shooting,” ESPN’s Jonathan Givony wrote.
Standing 6-foot-6 and weighing a sturdy 215 pounds, the 19-year-old New Jerseyan has a skill set coveted by NBA teams. He’s gifted at creating shots, penetrating, finishing at the rim and playmaking, a package that has prompted comparisons with Detroit’s Cade Cunningham, the 6-6 Detroit guard who made the All-Star tournament last season and finished the season averaging 26.1 points, 9.1 assists and 6.1 rebounds four years after the Pistons selected him No. 1 overall.
Given all that, it’s easy to see why the Spurs so far haven’t been receptive to trade offers for the No. 2 pick, which they won in the lottery last month.
“Rival teams attempting to engage in trade talks with the Spurs have come away with the impression it’s unlikely they move down or off the pick at No. 2; it seems San Antonio is excited about the possibility of adding a talent of Harper’s caliber and is willing to be patient, figuring out roster construction concerns later,” Givony wrote.
“The challenge of acquiring these types of players makes it difficult to envision the Spurs passing on the opportunity to add Harper ultimately,” he added.
USA Today’s Bryan Kalbrosky and many others joined Givony in saying the smart money is on the Spurs selecting Harper - if they don’t trade the pick.
“While the Spurs could have plenty of suitors if they wanted to shop this pick, it isn’t worth it to make a move unless it could land them Giannis Antetokounmpo, and such a trade is seeming more and more unlikely,” Kalbrosky wrote. “Instead, they could get someone with legitimate star potential to pair with Victor Wembanyama.”
Yahoo.com’s Kevin O’Connor also views Harper as the Spurs’ choice.
“Harper is a big-bodied lefty combo guard with NBA blood in his veins, as the son of Ron Harper, who was a 20/5/5 guy before winning five titles as a role player,” O’Connor wrote. “Like his father, Harper has a high floor with the skill, poise and playmaking instincts to dictate the game at his pace. He isn’t an ideal fit, though, next to De’Aaron Fox and Stephon Castle because of questions about his jumper.”
One of the Spurs’ biggest weaknesses coming out of last season’s 34-48 finish, which stretched their franchise-worst playoff drought to six seasons, is their lack of a consistent outside threat to open the floor up for Wembanyama. In his mock draft and in another lengthy piece, O’Connor focused on how the addition of Harper wouldn’t do much to change things.
With that in mind, O’Connor hedged his bet a bit on the Spurs taking Harper, saying if they go in a different direction, it will be because of their need for a shooter.
“Harper made only 36.8% of his catch-and-shoot 3s and just 28.7% of his dribble jumpers as a Rutgers freshman,” O’Connor wrote. "Fox and Castle are more interior-focused guards, too, and so is Jeremy Sochan in the frontcourt. How many shaky shooters can the Spurs really put around Victor Wembanyama?”
The rest of the first round could be more intriguing for Spurs fans.
The Spurs are the only team with two lottery picks after obtaining the No. 14 pick from Atlanta in the trade for Dejounte Murray in 2022. With their need for a shooter and a big man to back up Wembanyama, they are likely exploring several options at No. 14, including trading it to add a veteran or more draft assets for the future.
One veteran the Spurs likely have been eyeing is Brooklyn forward Cam Johnson, who averaged a career-high 18.8 points last season and shot 39.0% from 3-point range, giving him a career norm of 39.2%.
If the Spurs keep the 14th pick in the hopes of selecting another youngster to grow with Wembanyama, Castle and presumably Harper, the mock draft favorites at that slot include Arizona guard Carter Bryant and Connecticut forward Liam McNeeley. Other possibilities include French forward Noa Essengue and Georgia forward Asa Newell.
The Spurs also own a second-round pick, No. 38 overall.
