Why the San Antonio Spurs have set team 3-point records this season

With 4:56 remaining in the third quarter Sunday, Keldon Johnson squared up and buried a 3-pointer from the right arc.
That basket cut the Spurs’ deficit in a largely uncompetitive game against Golden State to a mere 93-68.
It also made Spurs history.
Johnson’s 3-pointer was the team’s 1,037th of the season, breaking a franchise record that was less than a year old.
“The league has all been trending upward for the past decade or so pretty significantly in terms of 3-point attempts, 3-pointers made,” Spurs acting coach Mitch Johnson said. “I’m sure this is a byproduct of that.”
Indeed, 22 of the top 25 3-point shooting seasons in NBA annals have all come since 2019-20. The only club to predate that span is the Houston Rockets, who put themselves on that list in three consecutive seasons from 2016 to 2019.
“That’s what everyone is hunting,” Spurs forward Harrison Barnes said. “That’s how 90% of the teams are constructed now, three or four guys who are 6-4 to 6-10 that can shoot threes.”
When Barnes entered the league in 2012-13, the NBA’s most prolific 3-point shooting team was the New York Knicks. They made 891 of them.
This year’s league leader, the Boston Celtics, has made 1,323 to threaten the NBA single-season mark of 1,363 set by the Golden State Warriors in 2022-23. The Celtics made 1,351 last season.
With the way the NBA has evolved, every new 3-point record is made to be soon broken.
“When I first came into the league, it was all about the low-post game,” said Barnes, citing former Spurs great Tim Duncan as “the master of that.” “There was maybe one designated guy on every team that shot 3s.”
Now NBA teams can scarcely function with more than one player on the court who cannot make 3-pointers consistently.
“In today’s game, you have maybe one designated guy who doesn’t really shoot threes,” Barnes said. “That’s how the game has changed in a decade.”
It has taken the Spurs a while to catch up to the league’s 3-point revolution.
They have snapped their franchise 3-point mark three times in the past four campaigns. This season could be the first in team annals to finish in the top-10 league-wide in 3-pointers made.

Heading into Tuesday’s game against Orlando at the Frost Bank Center, the Spurs’ 1,042 3-pointers ranks eighth in the NBA.
Notably, all seven teams ahead of the Spurs on that list are in contention for either a play-in or playoff spot. The two teams atop that chart – the defending champion Celtics and Cleveland Cavaliers – lead the Eastern Conference standings.
“The game has changed,” Spurs forward Sandro Mamukelashvili said. “It has become so much more about stretching the floor. We work on a lot of shooting and do a lot of shooting drills. Hopefully we keep shooting.”
The goal of the modern NBA game has become about getting up as many open 3-pointers as possible.
Emphasis on the word “open.”
Efficiency is still important, and is an area in which the Spurs will aim to improve as their rebuilding project continues.
Despite a club-record setting number of 3-pointers made and attempted, the Spurs’ conversion rate (35.5%) ranks 19th in the league.
“The 3-point shot is at the forefront in a lot of ways,” Johnson said. “But I think the rim and the paint is still king. It’s this awkward balance of chicken-or-the-egg, one-hand-washes-the-other type of deal.”
Ideally, the Spurs would like to eventually strike a balance between this year’s club, which has made a record-smashing number of 3-pointers at a relatively inefficient rate, and the 2018-19 club that led the league in percentage but ranked dead last in attempts.
“Not every three is the same, right?” Barnes said. “It’s not simply a matter of just hoisting them up. It’s which teams can generate the best shots. With those teams that generate the best shots, usually a good amount are making 3s.”
It is fair to assume much of the Spurs’ offseason roster building will involve looking to add shooters around the foundational pieces of Victor Wembanyama and De’Aaron Fox, neither of whom have yet proven to be elite 3-point marksmen.
Of the players on this season’s roster averaging more than 10 minutes per game, only one is shooting better than 40% from 3-point range.
That would be Barnes, who has hit them at a career-best clip of 41.6%.
The club’s leader in terms of 3-pointers made is Julian Champagnie, a bench player who has hit 152 of them at a 35.8% clip.
Wembanyama almost certainly would have finished as the team’s top 3-point maker had he not been felled by a blood clot issue in February. He finished his second NBA season with 142 made 3-pointers at 35.2%.
Fox is a career 33-percent shooter from deep. The Spurs are likely to have two first-round picks in the June draft with which to potentially upgrade their stable of shooters. That could be a focus of their summertime free agency agenda as well.
If all goes to plan, this season won’t be the last that the Spurs smash the franchise 3-point mark.
“I think that’s something we’ve continued to try to do while staying efficient,” Johnson said. “It’s encouraging we’re continuing to grow in that way.”
