SACRAMENTO — Throw out the Xs and Os. De’Aaron Fox said there’s a simple explanation for why the Spurs hit a franchise-record 25 3-pointers and had a season-high 41 assists in their 132-104 rout of the Sacramento Kings.

“We enjoy playing together,” he said. “We enjoy seeing each other succeed, so that makes sharing the ball much easier.”

There was plenty of proof of that Tuesday night at Golden 1 Center.

Victor Wembanyama had 18 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the field to lead a balanced scoring attack as the Spurs completed a sweep of their three-game series with the Kings.

The Spurs (51-18) won their third win in a row and improved to a league-best 19-2 since Feb. 1 with six other players scoring in double figures: Keldon Johnson (18), Julian Champagnie (17), Harrison Barnes (16) Fox (15), Dylan Harper (15) and Lindy Waters III (11).

The Spurs can clinch their first playoff berth since the 2018-19 season with a win at home over Phoenix on Thursday night.

The Spurs, who led by 41 in the third quarter, made 25 of 49 3-point attempts in improving to 24-11 on the road.

Ten players sank at least one three, including Champagnie, who hit 5 of 7, and Barnes, who made 4 of 5, as the Spurs eclipsed the 24 they recorded on Jan. 31, 2025, against Milwaukee.

Barnes started in place of Devin Vassell, who sat out the game with a sore left ankle. It was his first start since he was moved to the bench on Jan. 31 against Charlotte, snapping a streak 775 consecutive starts that spanned a decade.

The Spurs feasted in the first half against one of the league’s worst defensive teams, shooting 62.5% from the field (30 of 48) and 60.9% from beyond the arc (14 of 23) for a 78-47 lead at the break after leading by 33 points in the second quarter.

Champagnie (4 of 6 from deep) had 12 points in the first half and Barnes (3 of 3 from distance) scored 11.

The Spurs set a franchise record in the first half with 27 assists.

The 14 threes were the second most by the Spurs in the first half in franchise history. They hit 16 in the first half of a game against Oklahoma City on March 2, 2025.

French rookie Maxime Raynaud led the Kings (18-52) with a season-high 32 points.

The Kings’ DeMar DeRozan scored only two points against his former team after pumping in a season-high 41 in Sunday’s 116-111 win over Utah.

Here are three takeaways from the final game of a two-game road trip.

1. Champagnie has been a demon from deep

The fourth-year forward finished 5 of 7 from beyond the arc to set a franchise record for most games in a season with five-plus 3-pointers (11).

Champagnie leapfrogged four players who had 10 such games in a season: Sean Elliott (1995-96), Danny Green (2013-14), Patty Mills (2019-20) and Wembanyama (2024-25).

Mitch Johnson said the Spurs did a great job of feeding Champagnie the ball.

“Early in the season, we didn’t always recognize when guys were hot,” the coach said. “I don’t think it was ever intentional or out of selfishness, but I thought tonight we saw Julian hit a couple and then some guys made intentional efforts to try to get him the ball.”

2. Back-to-backs no problem for this bunch

The Spurs improved to 23-5 in back-to-back situations this season 24 hours after beating the Los Angeles Clippers 119-115.

That includes an impressive 11-3 mark in second games.

Although talent is the main reason for their back-to-back success, Mitch Johnson also gave credit before the game to the team’s medical staff.

“We have a village” of medical staffers, he said, that stress recovery plans for the players, including an emphasis on restorative sleep.

It’s a comprehensive approach that Wembanyama appreciates.

“Over the couple of years I’ve been with this organization, I’ve learned to trust the staff,” Wembanyama said. “And my trust is hard earned, but they have it.”

3. A fun French rivalry

Maxime Raynaud’s 16-point, 12-rebound double-double in Sacramento’s 139-122 loss to the Spurs last month in Austin impressed Kings coach Doug Christie because it came against the rookie center’s fellow Frenchman, Victor Wembanyama.

“I was proud of him, the way he played, attacked, because sometimes people play ‘buddy ball,’ and I definitely tell them, ‘We don’t do that. We can be friends afterward.’" Christie said. "I think he played as hard as he could, competed at a high level.”

Raynaud came to play again, finishing with a season-high 32 points to go along with nine rebounds.

It’s a fun French rivalry worth keeping an eye on as Raynaud develops his game.
