DENVER – Every morning, Spurs forward Julian Champagnie wakes up with an ever-dwindling number in his head.
Saturday in Denver, that number was six.
That is how many 3-point baskets Champagnie needed to break Danny Green’s single-season franchise record.
It is a figure Champagnie can’t help but know, even if he isn’t necessarily counting.
“I try not to think about it too much,” Champagnie said. “Just shoot the basketball.”
The approach worked well for Champagnie.
Champagnie went 6 of 9 from beyond the arc in Saturday’s 136-134 overtime loss to the Nuggets, bringing his season total of made 3-pointers to 192.
Green held the previous record of 191, set in 2014-15.
“Obviously I put the work in and I’m confident in my own abilities,” the 24-year-old Champagnie said, “but any record you get to break in this league is a blessing.”
Champagnie was in his early teens when Green had his heyday in silver and black.
He remembers Green’s place on the Spurs’ NBA Finals teams in 2013 and 2014 and has long considered Green’s rise from hard-scrabble background an inspiration.

Champagnie admires Green’s hard-fought path to Spurs immortality. In many ways, it mirrors his own journey.
Both players grew up in New York, albeit a decade apart, with Green on Long Island and Champagnie in Brooklyn.
Like Champagnie, Green came to the Spurs as a castoff, waived once by Cleveland and once by the Spurs and banished to the G League before finally returning to San Antonio and sticking.
Champagnie arrived in South Texas at a similar career crossroads after Philadelphia cut him in February 2022.
Now he has matched Green’s 3-point standard in San Antonio.
After starting the day 4-for-5, Champagnie swished his fifth 3-pointer 11 seconds into the fourth quarter to draw even atop the Spurs’ 3-point leaderboard.
Fifty-six seconds into overtime, Champagnie buried his sixth 3-pointer to own the record outright.
“It’s a testament to his hard work,” Spurs forward Keldon Johnson said. “Nobody thought Julian would be in this situation, except for Julian.”
Spurs coach Mitch Johnson – perhaps counter-intuitively – said Champagnie’s pursuit of the club 3-point record is not only a product of his 3-point shooting ability.
In order to earn a spot in the Spurs’ rotation, Champagnie first had to earn the coaching staff’s trust.
To do that, he had to find ways to contribute something on the nights when the shots were not going down.
“He was a guy that really wanted it so bad and wore his emotions on his sleeve, and at times rode the roller coaster of outcomes,” Mitch Johnson said.
Champagnie soon learned he could miss his three or four attempts but remain on the floor by grabbing rebounds and participating on defense.
“That’s what allowed him to play the minutes and have the opportunity at a record like that,” Mitch Johnson said.
By rounding out his game, Champagnie found himself in the right place at the right time to snap a franchise 3-point record. San Antonio in 2026 was overripe for it.
Of 30 teams in the league, the Spurs are the only one whose single-season 3-point mark is below 200, giving Champagnie a lower bar to clear than any other franchise record-chaser.
That old saw about records being made to be broken? When it comes to the Spurs’ 3-point mark, that is exceptionally true.
Earlier this season, Champagnie snapped Chuck Person’s club single-game 3-point record by hitting 11 in a New Year’s Eve victory over New York. Before Champagnie came along, Person’s mark of nine had stood for 28 years.
“He had an opportunity to prove himself, and he took that time and strung it together and bought into his role and the process here,” Keldon Johnson said. “Game by game, day by day, it was steady improvement.”
Sometimes these things come down to timing. Champagnie came along just as the Spurs were ready to join the NBA’s 3-point revolution.
Most teams have seen their single-season 3-point record rewritten over the past decade, as the league has gravitated to more of a long distance-oriented game.
Since the 2020-21 campaign, 21 teams have established new single-season 3-point records. Champagnie is out to make the Spurs No. 22 on the list.
Only two clubs boast older single-season 3-point marks than the Spurs’ – Milwaukee (Ray Allen, 2001-02) and Orlando (Dennis Scott, 1995-96).
Undrafted coming out of college at St. John’s, Champagnie was a nobody in NBA circles the day the Spurs claimed him off waivers in February 2022.
Keldon Johnson recalls quizzing his new teammate upon his arrival.
“I wasn’t familiar with Julian,” Johnson said.
Probing for some morsel of intel on the new guy, Johnson asked Champagnie what he considered to be his best basketball skill.
Champagnie shrugged. Shooting, he answered.
“We were like 17-50 at the time, something like that,” Keldon Johnson said. “I was like, ‘then shoot the ball.’ ”
Champagnie took Johnson’s advice to heart. Now he has a Spurs record to show for it.
