Victor Wembanyama had several reasons to be happy after the Spurs’ 118-116 win over Portland on Friday night, including that his back survived 34 minutes of action, the most he’s played since Dec. 3.

“Man, I’m so glad about how it feels now because I got hit at one point and it hurt, but nowhere near as much as it used to,” Wembanyama said.

With Wembanyama recording a team-high 28 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and two blocks, the Spurs overcame a 17-point fourth quarter deficit to win their second game in a row and improve to 13-12, giving them a winning record through 25 games for the first time since 2020-21.

The 7-foot-3 center missed a pair of games Dec. 5-6 with a sore lower back. When he returned Dec. 8, he logged 26 minutes in a win over New Orleans after missing a portion of the first half after a fall reaggravated the injury.

Due to the NBA Cup competition, the Spurs had four days off before facing the Trail Blazers, a hiatus Wembanyama said was “really beneficial” to his health.

Wembanyama getting through the Portland game unscathed was some good injury news for a team that faced the Trail Blazers without four injured rotation players: rookie Stephon Castle (shoulder), Zach Collins (back), Keldon Johnson (calf) and Tre Jones (shoulder).

Acting Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said before Friday’s game they are all day to day.

“I hope to have 'em back soon,” Johnson said. “But they all had some decent hits. (Keldon Johnson’s injury) wasn’t obviously a hit, but you just have to be mindful.”

With Castle, Collins, Johnson and Jones out, the Spurs had only 11 active players in Portland.

Paul’s ejection second in eight days for Spurs

Chris Paul getting tossed late in the first period after picking up two technical fouls for complaining about the officiating marked the second time in three games a Spur has been ejected from a game.

Colljns was ejected early in the second quarter against Sacramento Dec. 6. The NBA fined him $35,000 for making an obscene gesture before leaving the court.

Paul exited Friday’s game with five points and four assists in 11 minutes.

Paul wasn’t the only Spur who had a beef with the officials Friday. Devin Vassell questioned why he got hit with a technical foul with 9:08 left in the game.

“I think that’s the first one in my career,” Vassell said. "I didn’t even say a curse word and all of a sudden I get tech’d up. I’m like, ‘All right, cool.’ "

With point guards out, Johnson dug deep into bench

With Paul, Castle and Jones out, Johnson turned to Blake Wesley and Malaki Branham to fill in at point guard in Portland.

Wesley had eight points and matched his season high with eight assists in 25 minutes. He committed just one turnover.

Branham finished with two points and three assists in 15 minutes.

“Blake was great. Malaki, (backup center) Charlie (Bassey), (reserve forward) Sandro (Mamukelashvili),” Johnson said. “We needed everybody tonight. Everybody rang the bell.”

Forward Jeremy Sochan also took a few turns at point guard in Portland.
