3 takeaways as Wembanyama, Vassell lift Spurs over Blazers
PORTLAND, Ore. — Injuries forced the Spurs to start Friday’s game without four rotation players. An ejection that sent Chris Paul to the showers in the first quarter trimmed the roster even more.
But they still had plenty of firepower in the form of Victor Wembanyama and Devin Vassell.
Wembanyama had 28 points, Devin Vassell contributed 23 off the bench, and the Spurs rallied to defeat the shorthanded Trail Blazers 118-116 after trailing by 17 points with 8:19 left in the fourth quarter.
“Our biggest takeaway is never give up, never hang your heads,” Vassell said.
Wembanyama was 4 of 4 from the free throw line in the final 54.6 seconds, including sinking a pair with 2.4 seconds left to give the Spurs the lead by the final score after he was fouled by Jerami Grant on a mid-range shot coming out of a timeout.
“It went just as planned,” Wembanyama said of the play drawn up by acting Spurs coach Mitch Johnson that had Jeremy Sochan executing the inbounds pass. “I think if it wasn’t a (foul), it was a bucket.”
The Spurs celebrated their gritty comeback win after Deni Avdija’s halfcourt heave was wide of the basket.
Grant’s driving layup tied it at 116-116 with 6.4 seconds left after Vassell sank a turnaround fadeaway jumper to give the Spurs the lead with 12.2 seconds left.
“I just knew the clock was winding down and I just wanted to get to a shot I knew I was comfortable with,” Vassell said. “It’s a shot I shoot all day every day with (assistant coach) Mike (Noyes) that we work on.”
Julian Champagnie aided Wembanyama and Vassell with 19 points. In winning their second in a row to improve to 13-12, the Spurs also got 15 points from Jeremy Sochan, who started in place of rookie Stephon Castle, who was out with a shoulder injury.
The Spurs also played without Zach Collins (back), Keldon Johnson (calf) and Tre Jones (shoulder). Their ranks thinned even more when Paul got tossed after picking up two technical fouls in an 11-second span for complaining about the officiating.
The Blazers fell to 8-17 with their fifth loss in a row. Grant led Portland with 32 points and Anfernee Simons matched his season high with 30.
After trailing by as many as 13 points in the second quarter, the Blazers finished the third period with a 14-6 run to carry an 88-80 lead into the fourth. Avdija had 11 of his 19 points off the bench in the third to help Portland bounce back from a 10-point halftime deficit.
Here are three takeaways from the first of two games the Spurs will play against the Blazers in nine days (they clash again on Dec. 21 in San Antonio):
1, Sochan’s defense comes up big in fourth
Simons scored 15 points in the fourth quarter, but he had just four in the final 8:54 after Sochan put the clamps on him.
“I thought Jeremy imposed his will on the game,” Mitch Johnson said. “I thought Jeremy flipped the game on his head in a variety of ways and imposed his will and really gave us a spark.”

Sochan’s defensive effort came as no surprise to Portland coach Chauncey Billups, who sang his praises before the game.
“He’s got a high, high motor,” Billups said. “He’s a really good defender. He never stops moving. He’s going to be chasing down rebounds and picking people up full court sometimes and getting in the passing lanes, and he’s an agitator. He’s really good at it.”
2, Even after he got tossed, Paul had an impact
Paul greeted every player and coach just outside the locker room after the come-from-behind win.
He undoubtedly was both relieved that the Spurs won without him and proud of the way they kept their composure in the fourth quarter.

Both Vassell and Wembanyama said the young team has learned a lot from the 39-year-old future Hall of Famer about how to prevail in crunch time.
“I think tonight we for sure went through a stretch that we wouldn’t have survived one year ago, and for sure Chris has played a role in that,” Wembanyama said.
3, Wembanyama’s deserves more credit for his poise at the free throw line
Wembanyama said his clutch free throws came down to muscle memory.
“That comes through repetition,” he said. “And I’ve shot thousands of free throws for many years, so (all of that practice) is what I think about when I’m out there. That’s what my body feels. It feels the repetition. It’s muscle memory.”
Wembanyama came into the game shooting an impressive 86.8% (59 of 68) from the charity stripe, a fact that wasn’t lost on Mitch Johnson.
“His poise, his physicality, composure, fundamentals, I think all those things played a part in it,” Johnson said. “I think that (getting to the line more) will be a part of his game that we continue to want to grow, and I think when he does that, he’s going to be that much tougher to guard.”
