By Greg Luca | San Antonio Express-News (SAEN), 2026-04-21 21:29:56

Spurs lose Game 2 to Blazers after Victor Wembanyama exits

Short-handed Spurs blow late lead, lose Game 2

Letting a late lead slip after losing star center Victor Wembanyama to injury, the San Antonio Spurs stumbled into a disaster scenario Tuesday night at Frost Bank Center.

The Portland Trail Blazers scored nine straight points down the stretch, rallying from behind after trailing for most of the second half to beat the Spurs 106-103 in Game 2 and even the opening-round playoff series at one game apiece.

But the Spurs left with far greater concerns after Wembanyama exited in the second quarter, tumbling on a drive and banging his chin on the court. The team later announced he had entered concussion protocol.

Harrison Barnes also exited early in the fourth quarter while holding his left wrist, and Dylan Harper appeared to favor his hand while on the bench. Harper had already been dealing with a left thumb injury after jamming it in the third quarter of San Antonio’s regular-season finale.

The Spurs did not make another field goal after Devin Vassell hit a jumper with 3:37 remaining to give San Antonio a six-point lead. Portland took control from there, going ahead on a Jrue Holiday layup with just over two minutes left. A Robert Williams dunk with 12 seconds remaining pushed the lead to 104-101, and Vassell’s 3-point attempt from the corner in the closing seconds missed.

Scoot Henderson led the Blazers with 31 points, while Stephon Castle scored 18.

Short-handed Spurs surge as Harper gets hurt, Barnes exits, too

The Spurs opened the fourth quarter with a 13-0 run to build a 93-79 lead over Portland, pushing closer to a Game 2 win without Victor Wembanyama.

Stephon Castle has 18 points, De’Aaron Fox has 16 and Devin Vassell reached double figures with 10. Dylan Harper scored 10 off the bench, while Luke Kornet added 10 points and eight rebounds filling in for Wembanyama, drawing chants from the Frost Bank Center crowd.

But San Antonio’s injury concerns kept growing. With Wembanyama already out in concussion protocol, Harrison Barnes headed to the locker room with an apparent hand injury, and Harper appeared to hurt his hand as well before later returning.

‘Roweled Up’ shirts set the tone for Game 2 crowd

Every seat inside Frost Bank Center was set with the Spurs’ black “Roweled Up” playoff shirt ahead of Game 2, adding to the blackout look for Tuesday night’s crowd against Portland.

The shirt, which includes colorful starburst graphics and a “Playoffs ’26” stamp, got an extra push from Victor Wembanyama after Game 1, when he praised fans for actually wearing the giveaway tees.

Down Wembanyama, Spurs build third-quarter lead

With Victor Wembanyama sidelined in concussion protocol, the Spurs and Blazers traded blows through the third quarter, with San Antonio clinging to a 75-70 lead with 3:31 to play in the period.

Luke Kornet has six points and five rebounds in 16 minutes filling in for Wembanyama at center. When Kornet goes to the bench, the Spurs have turned to a smaller lineup with 6-foot-7 Harrison Barnes or 6-foot-7 Julian Champagnie as the tallest players on the court, flanked by 6-foot-6 wings Carter Bryant and Keldon Johnson.

San Antonio has yet to make a 3-pointer in the second half, but six different players have scored in the third quarter. Stephon Castle leads the Spurs with 16 points, while De’Aaron Fox has 13.

With Wembanyama out for rest of Game 2, Spurs tie Blazers at half

Victor Wembanyama will miss the remainder of Game 2 against the Trail Blazers after stumbling on a drive and banging his chin on the court.

The Spurs announced he entered concussion protocol. Wembanyama was attempting a spinning drive to the basket against Portland’s Jrue Holiday, who “pulled the chair” defensively by stepping out of Wembanyama’s path.

Wembanyama fell to the floor and remained down for a few moments before getting back to his feet and jogging to the locker room. Wembanyama checked out with 8:57 remaining in the second quarter and the Spurs trailing 34-32.

Per NBA, if a player is diagnosed with a concussion, he cannot return to participating for at least 48 hours, including the date of diagnosis, and until after he completes the required return-to-participation process.

Without the Defensive Player of the Year and MVP finalist, San Antonio hung tough with Portland and went into halftime tied 57-57. Stephon Castle leads San Antonio with 12 points, five rebounds and three assists, while Devin Vassell has eight.

Wembanyama finished with five points, four rebounds and one block. Scoot Henderson has led the Blazers with 19 points on 6-of-8 shooting, while Deni Avdija has 12.

Wembanyama’s big week rolls on as Spurs turn to Game 2

The Spurs aren’t slowing down to celebrate Victor Wembanyama.

The “wow” moments are still coming, but with Game 2 against Portland less than an hour away, Mitch Johnson and the Spurs aren’t lingering on Wembanyama’s latest milestone.

The 22-year-old just became the youngest Defensive Player of the Year and the first to win it unanimously. He followed it with 35 points in his playoff debut, a franchise record.

Johnson called the honor “appropriate” after the work Wembanyama has put in, and he’s got his own recognition to consider as a Coach of the Year finalist.

But there’s little time to reflect.

Now it’s on to Game 2.
