3 Takeaways as the Lakers’ Anthony Davis outduels Spurs’ Wembanyama

As the saying goes, when you come at the champs, you best not miss.

The Spurs didn’t miss much in Friday’s NBA Emirates Cup opener against the Los Angeles Lakers, but down the stretch missed just enough to fall 120-115 at the Frost Bank Center.

Anthony Davis scored 40 points with 12 rebounds and an otherwise out-of-sync LeBron James turned in his fourth consecutive triple-double with 15 points, 16 rebounds and 12 assists, as the Lakers out-maneuvered the Spurs down the stretch of a tight game.

The Spurs led 115-114 after rookie Stephon Castle finished a tough left-handed layup over James with 1:44, but they would not score again after that.

The Lakers closed the game with a Davis dunk, a James layup and a pair of James free-throws to eek out the victory.

For both teams, Friday marked the opener of the league’s annual in-season tournament. Last season, the Lakers won the inaugural NBA Cup (since renamed the Emirates Cup, after the airline that sponsors it).

Victor Wembanyama had 28 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Spurs, who also got 22 points from Castle.

It wasn’t enough to win the Spurs to their first-ever in-season tournament victory.

Here are three takeaways from Friday’s game, which dropped the Spurs to 6-7 heading into a back-to-back closer Saturday in Dallas:

1. The Spurs will get a Cup win … eventually

Friday just wasn’t the day.

The Spurs began the day one of two teams who have not won a game in the NBA in-season tournament since its advent last year, having gone 0-4 in group play a season ago.

Memphis, which also went 0-4 in the tournament last season, was playing its first contest in this year’s tourney late at Golden State on Friday.

The Spurs’ search for their first tourney win will be difficult. Their next crack comes Tuesday at home against a 10-2 Oklahoma City team that has been surging even without injured big man Chet Holmgren.

A Nov. 26 game at Utah could be the Spurs’ best bet of cracking the tournament win column. The team’s final scheduled group play game comes Dec. 3 at Phoenix.

If they play as well as they did Friday against the Lakers, they are bound to pick up a tournament victory sooner or later.

2. Castle savors lesson from LeBron

Though Castle had one of his best games as a pro, the moment most memorable to him likely came after the final horn.

That’s when James approached him to offer a couple of pointers.

“I’ve been watching him since I was a kid,” Castle said. “So for him to come up to me and talk to me for even that little bit, it really meant a lot.”

The tutorial was a short one. James talked to Castle about different reads he could have made throughout the game.

“I really respect him and appreciate him for coming up and saying that to me,” Castle said. “He didn’t really have to.”

Image

The way James sees it, for the good of the sport these kinds of conversations with young players are mandatory.

“I’ve always had an open-door policy when people want to get better and learn the game,” James said. “Every group that comes in every year, I do the same thing. Those guys are the new breed. They’re going to have to carry the league when the old farts leave.”

From the Spurs’ perspective, the best part of the rookie’s night was the fact he refused to back down from his idol.

On a key possession late in the game, Castle drove James and finished a left-handed layup over the 20-time All-Star.

Simply performing in the same arena as James and Davis and holding his own is a big step for Castle.

“When you see young players and they play some of those guys in the league – and we know who those guys are – sometimes you can be a starstruck,” Johnson said. “And sometimes you like to compete with that. There’s probably a little bit of both.”

Johnson’s final assessment of Castle’s night against the Lakers?

“I thought he was a stud just from the competitive aspect, not just the results,” Johnson said. “He played great … but just the way he attacked the game, I think says a lot more than the numbers, and his numbers were loud.”

3. Wemby packed the stat sheet, but not from the foul line

Wembanyama followed up his career-best 50-point night against Washington with another stat-full night Friday.

The exception came from the free-throw line, where Wembanyama went without an attempt for the first time this season.

“He didn’t get a whistle tonight,” Johnson said. “I think that’s tough. I thought he had some strong drives. We’ll just have to stay with that and continue to help him find solutions to continue to get to the paint and get to the rim and wear those officials down.”

Image

Davis, Wembanyama’s Lakers counterpart, by contrast went 10 of 12 from the free-throw line.

At least part of the explanation for a lack of foul shots is Wembanyama’s tendency to shoot from the 3-point stripe. He took 13 shots from long distance against the Lakers, the third straight game that number has been in double-digits.

As a rookie, Wembanyama had three games without a free-throw try, so it’s not like the notion is foreign to him.

In a perfect world, the Spurs would like Wembanyama to combine his 3-point shooting with an aggression that forces officials to at least occasionally send him to the foul line.
