And though Wembanyama finished as runner-up to Rudy Gobert for Defensive Player of the Year, he was again a decisive winner in the category of “best defensive player,” garnering 40% of the votes. Gobert, Miami center Bam Adebayo and Boston guard Jrue Holiday each received 10% to finish in a three-way tie for second. The league’s reigning blocks king was also voted “best interior defender” and tied for second with New York wing OG Anunoby as the “most versatile defender,” trailing only Milwaukee star Giannis Antetokounmpo.
“If you just watch the game, you see how he affects the game defensively,” Spurs point guard Tre Jones said last season. “It’s tough because of our (bad) record, but I think most people know he’s already the best defender in the league.”
