Wemby led the NBA in blocks with 197 (just over three per game) while totaling 66 steals, and he finished second in the league in defensive rating (110.4) and defensive rebounds (9.5). He also became the unofficial inventor of the “nope”, i.e. when a player drives but decides to turnaround or not even attempt a shot that many would consider open or close to it due to his presence.

Wemby is also a finalist for Most Valuable Player, along with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Nikola Jokic, which will be announced in mid-May on an unspecified date. At this point, SGA seems like the odds-on favorite, and it wouldn’t at all surprise me if due to the relatively low number of minutes played this season and lack of playoff appearances when the votes were tallied, the voters just aren’t ready to give that award to Wemby. That being said, if he does win MVP this season or another time in which he also wins DPOY, he will join elite company with only Michael Jordan, Hakeem Olajuwon and Giannis Antetokounmpo achieving the feat.

Other Spurs up for rewards that have scheduled announcement dates include Keldon Johnson for Sixth Man of the Year (announced on Wednesday on ESPN at 5:00 CT) and Harrison Barnes for the Sportsmanship award (announced on Thursday via the NBA). Also, Mitch Johnson is a finalist for Coach of the Year and De’Aaron Fox for Teammate of the Year, which like the MVP, has yet to be assigned announcement dates.

The Spurs will play Game 2 against the Trail Blazers tomorrow at 7:00 PM CT on NBC and Peacock.

When fellow Frenchman Rudy Gobert was on his way to winning the 2023-24 NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award, Victor Wembanyama predicted it would only be a matter of time before he had a stranglehold on the honor.

“Let him win it now, because after that, it’s no longer his turn,” the 7-foot-4 center said.

A blood clot in his right shoulder prevented him from logging the necessary 65 games to win it last season, but a case can be made that Wembanyama’s long-term ownership of the Hakeem Olajuwon Trophy is now underway.

Wembanyama was named the league’s top defender on Monday by a global media panel of 100 voters, becoming at 22 the youngest player to collect the hardware and the first to do so unanimously since the award’s inception in 1982-83.

Oklahoma City’s Chet Holmgren was the runner-up with 76 second-place votes.

Wembanyama joins Alvin Robertson (1986), David Robinson (1992) and Kawhi Leonard (2015, 2016) as the only players in Spurs history to win the award.

“It feels great. Super proud," Wembanyama told NBC. "My shot blocking is something I’ve been working on forever.”

Wembanyama anchored a defense that finished third in the NBA in defensive rating. With Wembanyama averaging a league-high 3.1 blocks per game, 11.5 rebounds and 1.0 steals to go along with 25.0 points over 65 games, the Spurs allowed 110.4 points per 100 possessions to trail only Detroit (108.9) and Oklahoma City (106.5). The Spurs allowed 10.1 fewer points per 100 possessions with him on the court than off.

"He probably would have blocked more shots if guys were like, ‘Nah, I’m going in there anyways,’ " Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox said.
“He deters people from even shooting the ball. You’ll see a lot of guys (do a U-turn after entering the paint). They’ll see him in there and dribble the ball out or kick out. … He changes the whole dynamic of your defense and he changes the dynamic of the other team’s offenses.”

Wembanyama’s height, of course, is a huge plus, but his teammates say he has worked tirelessly to become one of the best defensive players in NBA history.

“I would say he’s a natural at basketball, but Victor’s work ethic is unmatched,” Spurs forward Keldon Johnson said. “Everything he’s achieved so far has been earned and never given. He’s one of the hardest workers I’ve ever been around. He takes his craft very seriously. And I feel like this is just a small token of what’s to come for Victor.”

Wembanyama is also a finalist for MVP in a field that includes two players that have already won the Michael Jordan Trophy: Oklahoma City’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Denver’s Nikola Jokic.

The Spurs are in line for another piece of hardware on Wednesday when the league announces the winner of the Sixth Man of the Year Award. Johnson is a finalist for the John Havlicek Trophy along with Denver’s Tim Hardaway Jr. and Miami’s Jaime Jaquez Jr.

Johnson is the only one of the three who played in all 82 games. He averaged 13.2 points, 5.4 rebounds and 1.4 assists for a team that won 62 games.

“Other players have had amazing seasons, but I feel like I’ve earned it,” Johnson said. “But none of it matters now. We’re in the playoffs and winning is what matters.”

And it’s not just the players who are getting recognition. Mitch Johnson is finalist for coach of the year in a field that includes Detroit’s J.B. Bickerstaff and Boston’s Joe Mazzulla.

Johnson led the Spurs to the second best record in the NBA behind the Thunder after they named him head coach in May when Hall of Famer Gregg Popovich retired from coaching. The Spurs finished 34-48 with Johnson as their acting head coach in 2024-25 after Popovich suffered a stroke five games into the season.

“Tremendously happy for him,” Spurs forward Devin Vassell said of Johnson before Game 1 of the Spurs’ first-round playoff series with Portland.

“He was my guy, my personal development guy. So to see the growth he’s had, to see where he is at now, to be able to come in after a coach like coach Pop, one of the greatest coaches of all time, if not the greatest coach of all time, and have the type of season he’s had and be able to lead us and take control over this team and over this organization has been huge to see.”

“Yes, I would,” he said.

The 7-foot-4 San Antonio Spurs big man won the NBA’s 2026 Defensive Player of the Year award, earning all 100 first-place votes from a panel of select media members. The 22-year-old beat out Oklahoma City Thunder big man Chet Holmgren and Detroit Pistons wing Ausar Thompson to become the youngest player to win the award since it was introduced for the 1982-83 season.

Holmgren finished second with 76 second-place votes and 11 third-place votes, followed by Thompson, Minnesota Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert and Toronto Raptors forward Scottie Barnes.

Following the announcement, Wembanyama joined the “NBC Showtime” pregame show alongside his mother, Elodie, and the Spurs’ defensive coordinator, Sean Sweeney.

“It feels great. My mom is sitting here next to me and said something really true,” Wembanyama said on the broadcast. “The real struggle might have been getting to 65 games. But I’m super happy to win this award and super proud to be the first-ever unanimous.”

This was a widely expected outcome once Wembanyama crossed the minimum games played threshold to become eligible for the award. (He played in 64 regular-season games and the NBA Cup final, which counted as his 65th game for award eligibility.)

He averaged a league-leading 3.1 blocks per game this season, and the Spurs allowed 10.2 fewer points per 100 possessions with him on the floor. Opponents shot just 40.7 percent from the field against him and 8.7 percentage points worse than average when he was the closest defender, according to NBA stats, both the best in the league among those who contested at least 500 shots this season. He joined Dikembe Mutombo and Marcus Camby as the only players to lead the NBA in blocks for three straight seasons.

But data can only do so much to capture his defensive impact. Watching even a few moments of him on the floor makes it obvious just how much he distorts opposing offenses.

“To sit and say today that my defense is more impactful than Victor Wembanyama, I think that would be a lie, and I’ve never been one to not be honest,” said Golden State Warriors big man Draymond Green, a former Defensive Player of the Year and nine-time All-Defense selection. “I wouldn’t put myself above him, but I wouldn’t put myself below anyone.”

The Spurs built a defensive system around Wembanyama that allows him to effectively play zone around the paint, taking the “low man” position of patrolling the rim to new heights. Offensive players will often drive toward him, then turn all the way around in plays that have at times been referred to as “Nopes,” “Neverminds” or other terms never used for his peers. These nightly occurrences are the greatest examples of how his defense is about his sheer presence.

“I happen to be the guy that is in the spotlight,” Wembanyama said Monday. “But I am part of the system.”

When campaigning for the MVP award in March, Wembanyama’s first core tenet was that defense is 50 percent of the game.

“My first one would be that defense is 50 percent of the game and that it is undervalued so far in the MVP race,” he said. “I believe I’m the most impactful player defensively in the league.”

Wembanyama had the most blocks in a game this season, with nine, and had two games with 10 combined blocks and steals (stocks). Miami Heat center Kel’el Ware was the only other player to have even one double-digit stocks game.

When discussing his prolific block rate, which underrates his defensive impact because many players avoid shooting at all when he is lurking nearby, Wembanyama was smiling as he recalled his offseason visit to the home of the namesake of the trophy he just won, Hakeem Olajuwon.

“(I) was looking at this plaque that said blocked shots leader of all time, and he said, ‘You’re gonna beat that one day,’” Wembanyama said. “One step at a time.”

Quand on le voit jouer il est absolument partout, on l’attend bien sûr en défense et en pivot surtout MAIS il sait tout faire, même meneur. jump shots, threes, dribbles de derrière la ligne des trois points et cerise sur le gâteau il est très bon passeur. les Spurs vont écraser la compétition dans les années a venir, l’équipe se construit autour de lui et c’est pas fini.
