Wembamanya, five others ruled out for Spurs preseason opener

Spurs Victor Wembanyama answers question during Spurs Media Day activities Monday morning at the Victory Capital Performance Center.

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said after practice Saturday he wasn’t sure who would be on the court for the team’s preseason opener.

“You can probably guess who some of the starters are, but I want to see how they come out of this,” Popovich said, referring to a grueling first week of training camp. “It was a tough week and I want to see what their bodies look like and that kind of thing.”

With that assessment helping guide them, Popovich and the medical staff decided to sit out star center Victor Wembanyama and five other players on Monday when the Spurs faced the Oklahoma City Thunder at the Frost Bank Center.

Point guard Chris Paul, guard Devin Vassell, forward/center Zach Collins, center Charles Bassey and guard David Duke Jr. also didn’t suit up.

Guard Blake Wesley echoed Popovich’s description of last week being a “tough” one practice-wise.

“It’s been physically tough,” Wesley said. “We’ve been going two and a half hours (each workout). We had a hard practice Saturday…all week. We got after it, with some defensive stuff, and I feel like we got better.”

In addition to participating in all of the team’s practices since training camp got underway last Tuesday, Wembanyama is coming off a busy summer that included playing for France in the Olympic tournament in Paris.

Paul’s summer wasn’t as eventful, but at 39, he could use the rest. The decision to sit out the other players centered on their health.

The Spurs announced before the start of camp that Vassell would likely miss the first five games of the regular season after undergoing foot surgery in June. Collins (shoulder) and Bassey (knee) both underwent surgery either during last season or in the offseason. Duke has been limited in camp due to a hip injury he suffered while playing with the Spurs summer league team.

Collins and Bassey have been participating in practice, but there’s no rush to get them back on the court after their procedures. Vassell is doing basketball activities at practice and was seen at shootaround Monday morning doing one-on-one work with staffers. He will be re-evaluated on Nov. 1.

The Spurs’ second exhibition game is set for Wednesday at home against the Orlando Magic. They are scheduled to open the regular season on Oct. 24 at Dallas.

With Wembanyama, Collins and Bassey likely to have light loads during the five-game exhibition schedule, 6-foot-9, 235-pound forward Sandro Mamukelashvili could see increased playing time at both forward and center.

“If I have to play 48 (minutes), I’ll play 48. If I have to play 58, I’ll play 58,” the fourth-year pro said. “Whatever they need me to play, that’s how much I’ll play…But we might go with a small lineup. As a lot of people say nowadays, it’s position-less basketball.”

Recently signed second-year forward Nathan Mensah (6-9, 230 pounds) could also see time at center.

Sochan returns to orthodox form at line

Third-year forward Jeremy Sochan is back to shooting free throws with two hands after using an unconventional one-handed delivery since December 2023.

The switch back to two hands came after a summer of working on his shooting form with Spurs shooting coach Jimmy Baron.

“I’d say my form has changed,” Sochan said last Monday at media day. “Me and Jimmy, we’ve been working on it, getting my elbow higher, a little more arc.”

Sochan made the switch to shooting free throws one-handed after a conversation with Popovich and assistant coach Brett Brown. After shooting 58.9% as a freshman at Baylor, Sochan improved to 69.8% as a rookie before connecting on 77.1% last season. He also showed improvement from 3-point range, hitting 30.8 percent on 3.1 attempts last season after shooting 24.6% on 2.4 attempts as a rookie.

Teammates said Sochan has shot well at the free throw line at practice with his new form.

“It looks pretty good,” Wesley said. “It looks a little smoother and his (perimeter) shot has gotten better too. I know him and Jimmy Baron have been working on his shot. It’s looking good.”

Mamu vs. Manu in trick-shot showdown?

Mamukelashvili, the Spurs’ resident trick-shot artist, said he’s looking forward to the day that franchise legend Manu Ginobili agrees to square off with him in a game of H-0-R-S-E.

“I would love to,” Mamukelashvili said. “I think I would win, but I know he is a great trick-shot artist too. Today, I beat him actually. We bet on this shot and he tried to do me dirty and throw a ball at me while I was shooting, and that was an and one…So, Manu, I need it (the bet’s payoff).”

Mamukelashvili became a viral sensation last season with the successful trick shots he pulled off after practices and shootarounds, including a no-look, over-the-shoulder, length-of-court shot he sank after a shootaround on Feb. 14 in Dallas.

“I’m learning some (new ones),” he said. “I’m waiting for when the season starts for after the shootarounds. I think some of them are going to be nice.”
