Spurs rule out Wembanyama, several others for preseason opener
Spurs Victor Wembanyama and new addition Chris Paul share a moment after being photographed during Spurs Media Day activities Monday morning at the Victory Capital Performance Center.
Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said Saturday he wasn’t sure who would be on the court for the team’s preseason opener.
“You can probably guess who some of the starters are, but I want to see how they come out of this,” Popovich said, referring to the first week of training camp. “It was a tough week and I want to see what their bodies look like and that kind of thing.”
With that assessment out of the way, the Spurs announced Sunday that several players, including star center Victor Wembanyama, won’t suit up against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Monday night at the Frost Bank Center.
Five other players were also ruled out: Chris Paul, Devin Vassell, Zach Collins, Charles Bassey and David Duke Jr.
Vassell (foot), Collins (shoulder) and Bassey (knee) all underwent surgery either during last season or in the offseason. Duke has been limited in camp due to a hip injury he suffered while playing with the Spurs summer league team.
Vassell is expected to miss at least the first five games of the regular season. The Spurs said previously that he would be re-evaluated on Nov. 1.
Collins and Bassey have been participating in practice, but there’s no rush to get them back on the court after their procedures.
Wembanyama, last season’s NBA Rookie of the Year, and Paul, the 39-year-old future Hall of Famer in July, both participated in all five practices last week.
The Spurs’ second exhibition game is set for Wednesday at home against the Orlando Magic.
