ESPN.com

ESPN panel picks Wembanyama to win major award, make All-Star team

Spurs star Victor Wembanyama with his 2023-24 NBA Rookie of the Year trophy.

Even as he bloomed into a shot-blocking, history-making leviathan last season, Victor Wembanyama realized the trophy for Defensive Player of the Year would end up in the hands of Minnesota center and fellow Frenchman Rudy Gobert. So, a few months before Gobert won his record-tying fourth award, the Spurs’ rookie offered a public warning to his old friend.

“Let him win it now,” Wembanyama told reporters back in March, “because after that it’s no longer his turn.”

An ESPN panel including more than two dozen NBA reporters, analysts and editors wholeheartedly agrees.

In ESPN.com’s recent preseason awards poll, Wembanyama was picked to win 2024-25 Defensive Player of the Year with 67% of the first-place votes. Gobert, who finished second, garnered 5% of the first-place votes and trailed Wembanyama by 47 total points. (Note on point totals: A first-place vote received five points, a second-place vote three points and a third-place vote one.)

That would represent an inverse of last season’s DPOY ballot, which saw Gobert collect 72 of 99 first-place votes to finish ahead of Wembanyama, who became the first rookie in NBA annals to finish as runner-up. Though, at officially 20 years and 101 days old at season’s end, the 7-foot-3 star did become the youngest player in league history to make the All-Defensive first team.

Wembanyama was also the panel’s overwhelming pick for the most likely first-time All-Star – he received 90% of the first-place votes – and finished in a tie for first with Oklahoma City’s Jalen Williams for Most Improved Player.

The experts also seemed to like how the Spurs built around the reigning Rookie of the Year, flanking Wembanyama with future Hall of Fame point guard Chris Paul, steady veteran wing Harrison Barnes and No. 4 overall pick Stephon Castle. Coming off a second straight 22-win season, San Antonio finished second to Memphis as the team best positioned to make a significant jump in the standings.

Castle also received some individual support, receiving the fourth-most votes for Rookie of the Year behind Houston’s Reed Sheppard, Memphis’ Zach Edey and Portland’s Donovan Clingan.
