The NBA announced the 2023-24 All-Rookie teams Monday afternoon. In a moment that stopped no presses, the Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama found his name on the first team.
That outcome was certainly expected for the league’s freshly stamped Rookie of the Year, who earned that award earlier this month in a unanimous vote of NBA media members.
The 20-year-old Wembanyama was similarly honored Monday, when he became the eighth Spurs player to earn first-team All-Rookie laurels and the first since Kawhi Leonard in 2012.
Wembanyama received the news while back home in France, where he has returned since the Rookie of the Year announcement to begin preparations for the Paris Olympics later this summer.
“I have this energy that pushes me to want more,” Wembanyama said at the ceremony celebrating his Rookie of the Year win earlier this month. “But I feel like you have to treat yourself sometimes and appreciate what you’ve done. You have to want it every day but also have to enjoy the moment, because I’m already living through great things.”
The other Spurs to land on a first-team All-Rookie squad are Tim Duncan, David Robinson, Tony Parker, Willie Anderson, Gary Neal and Greg “Cadillac” Anderson.
Four other Spurs rookies once received second-team mention: Manu Ginobili, Sean Elliott, DeJuan Blair and, last year, Jeremy Sochan.
The rest of the 2023-24 All-Rookie first team released Monday included Oklahoma City’s Chet Holmgren, Charlotte’s Brandon Miller, Miami’s Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Golden State’s Brandon Podziemski.
Wembanyama and Holmgren were the only players to receive a full 99 first-team votes.
The second team consisted of Dallas’ Dereck Lively II, Houston’s Amen Thompson, Utah’s Keyonte George, OKC’s Cason Wallace and Memphis’ GG Jackson II.
For Wembanyama, Monday’s announcement amounted to another heap of recognition following one of the most productive inaugural campaigns in NBA annals.
Last year’s No. 1 overall draft pick, the 7-foot-3 center appeared in 71 games, leading the league’s rookie class with averages of 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds and 3.6 blocks.
He was the second rookie to lead the NBA in blocks, joining Manute Bol in 1985-86, and the first to surpass a combined 300 blocks plus steals since Shaquille O’Neal in 1992-93.
Wembanyama was the youngest player in league history to record a 20-20 game, the youngest to record a 5x5 game, the youngest to post a 40-20 game and the youngest to post a triple-double involving blocks and another involving assists in the same season.
It is likely Wembanyama is not finished being honored.
The NBA is set to announce its All-Defensive teams Tuesday. As a strong runner-up to Minnesota’s Rudy Gobert in the this year’s Defensive Player of the Year balloting, Wembanyama seems a shoo-in to become the first rookie in NBA history to earn a first-team All-Defense mention.
Wembanyama is expected to garner at least a few votes when the league unveils its All-NBA teams Wednesday, though probably not enough to land among the top 15 players as a rookie.
Despite the onslaught of individual honors, Wembanyama said he was most proud of the growth the Spurs showed as a group throughout the season.
“I had many things on my mind the whole season,” Wembanyama said before departing for France. “There was nothing bigger than the work (put in) for the future and also showing the way as a leader and showing our improvement throughout the season.”
