Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama not interested in promoting betting sites

SAN ANTONIO – Count Spurs star Victor Wembanyama as one of the professional athletes who isn’t interested in promoting sports betting sites.

The Frenchman expressed his view on the subject Thursday after a training camp workout.

“Absolutely not,” Wembanyama said when asked if he’d ever consider promoting a sports betting website. “I will never do that. Honestly, I think it’s very sad to see some players promote it. Everybody does whatever they want, but without me.”

Wembanyama was subsequently asked how he makes decisions about which brands to promote.

“In the past, there was a dimension of money,” he said. “Not anymore. Even if I said that, I’ve refused plenty, much, much more money than I’ve made for things that were not [in line with] my values. And now, I want to promote things that have a good impact, have a good influence with who I can share messages and values. Obviously, we earn millions and millions. This is not our biggest strength. Our biggest strength is inspiring. I want to inspire in a good way. That’s the strongest thing I can do.”

Several of Wembanyama’s NBA peers currently promote sportsbooks and prediction platforms, including LeBron James, who moved from DraftKings to Polymarket in September, Kevin Durant (FanDuel), who is also an investor in Kalshi and Giannis Antetokounmpo, who became a shareholder at Kalshi back in February.

“The internet is full of opinions,” Antetokounmpo wrote in a since-deleted post on X, announcing the move. “I decided it was time to make some of my own. Today, I’m joining Kalshi as a shareholder.”

Three-time MVP Nikola Jokic, in 2023, became the first brand ambassador of Superbet in Serbia.

The NBA’s collective bargaining agreement treats sports betting operators and prediction markets the same when it comes down to player partnerships. Players aren’t allowed to promote betting on any market related to the NBA. But they are allowed to endorse and hold de minimis equity investments in sports betting companies with some restrictions.

Wembanyama, meanwhile, enters his fourth season in the league coming off San Antonio’s first appearance in the NBA Finals since 2014. The two-time All-Star last season became the first player to unanimously win NBA Defensive Player of the Year after leading the league in blocks for the third-consecutive season.

Wembanyama, 22, finished third last season in voting for NBA MVP.

By Maxime Aubin à San Antonio (États-Unis) / L’Équipe, 2026-10-01 21:13:26

By Jared Weiss / The Athletic, 2026-10-02 03:54:28

Victor Wembanyama says it’s ‘very sad’ to see NBA players ‘promote’ prediction markets

SAN ANTONIO — Victor Wembanyama has only a few endorsement deals. He was elevated to a signature athlete at Nike this summer, has graced several Louis Vuitton campaigns and is on the cover of NBA 2K27. But he and his representatives have carefully chosen how he is shown to the world and what he represents.

On Thursday, the San Antonio Spurs star was asked if he would ever be a spokesperson for a prediction market company. In contrast to LeBron James, who announced a deal with Polymarket that is reportedly worth $15 million, and Giannis Antetokounmpo, who revealed that he signed with Kalshi after he was not moved at last February’s trade deadline, Wembanyama rejected joining that group.

“Absolutely not. I will never do that,” Wembanyama said. “Honestly, I think it’s very sad to see some players promote it. Everybody does whatever they want, but without me.”

The Spurs star has been particular about aligning himself with companies that reflect his values. Though Nike has historically faced criticism for its factory standards and labor practices, few players have declined to work with the sneaker giant on ethical grounds.

But betting markets have presented a different ethical quandary in a country bombarded with ads for the biggest players in the industry. Initially, daily fantasy companies like DraftKings and FanDuel took over the sports betting space once it became widely legalized over the past few years. Then, prediction markets emerged that allowed people to bet on virtually anything, leading to Kalshi and Polymarket rising to prominence. Last week, the New York attorney general sued Polymarket, accusing the company of running an “illegal gambling operation.” The state sued Kalshi earlier this year.

James, who now plays for the Philadelphia 76ers but is reportedly living in New York, recently posted a video of NFL picks to his social media and encouraged viewers to sign up for Polymarket to receive a bonus bet. (James had a similar endorsement deal with DraftKings that began in 2024 and ended earlier this summer.)

Don’t expect to see one of those videos from Wembanyama. His co-agent, Jeremy Medjana, explained to The Athletic in June where the player draws the line.

“We’re not gonna mix his image with sodas like Coca-Cola,” Medjana said. “They all want him, but Victor will never sell soda. Because he doesn’t want to kill the kids.”

Wembanyama described what he looks for in a sponsorship partner, and what component of the deal matters to him.

“There was a dimension of money in the past. Not anymore,” he said Thursday. “But even if I say that, I’ve refused plenty, much, much more money than I’ve made for things that were not to my values. Now I want to promote things that have a good impact and a good influence on the world, with whom I can share messages and values.”

Wembanyama reportedly agreed to a memorabilia endorsement deal with Fanatics in 2023, and made an appearance at Fanatics Fest in New York this summer. It is common for players to engage in agreements with various memorabilia and trading card companies. Fanatics launched a sportsbook in 2023 and now runs a prediction market, though Wembanyama has no apparent affiliation with the gambling side of the company.

The future of prediction markets remains unclear as it begins to face more regulatory scrutiny, but even regulated betting companies have been criticized for programs that encourage people who lose bets to keep playing. Wembanyama’s stance is that representing something positive for society, and standing for his principles long-term, is more important than earning even more money.

“Obviously, we earn millions and millions. This is not our biggest strength,” Wembanyama said. “Our biggest strength is inspiring, and we can inspire in a good way or a bad way. I want to inspire in a good way. That’s the strongest thing I can do.”

By Jeff McDonald, Staff Writer / San Antonio Express-News, 2026-10-01 13:21:18

Image

Would Victor Wembanyama ever endorse FanDuel? Don’t bet on it

Image
San Antonio Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama answers questions from reporters during the NBA basketball team’s media day at the Victory Capital Performance Center in San Antonio, Monday, Sept. 28, 2026.

Through his first three NBA seasons, Spurs star Victor Wembanyama has signed endorsement deals with shoe companies, sports drink makers, luxury fashion brands and video-game publishers.

There is one kind of company Wembanyama vows will never get his name — sports gambling and prediction-market sites.

Asked after Thursday’s practice whether he would ever consider partnering with one — as some of his NBA counterparts have — Wembanyama was emphatic.

“Absolutely not,” Wembanyama said. “I will never do that.”

Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo is a shareholder in Kalshi, a prediction-market app. Houston’s Kevin Durant is a paid spokesman for FanDuel. Philadelphia’s LeBron James, the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, recently signed a $15 million endorsement deal with Polymarket.

Without singling out any player by name, the 22-year-old Wembanyama made clear what he thinks of those choices.

“Honestly, I think it’s very sad to see some players promote it,” Wembanyama said.

Under league rules, players are permitted to endorse betting and prediction-market sites, provided the endorsements do not involve bets on specific NBA games or entities.

Wembanyama’s portfolio includes Nike, Louis Vuitton, 2K Sports, sports-apparel company Fanatics and Barcode, a sports hydration beverage.

Like scores of Spurs stars — and non-stars — before him, he also willingly appears in locally loved H-E-B commercials each season.

But when it comes to choosing which brands to promote, Wembanyama said money is no longer the deciding factor.

“There was a dimension of money in the past. Not anymore,” Wembanyama said. “Even as I say that, I’ve refused much, much more money for things that were not to my values.”

Sticking to his principles, Wembanyama said, matters more.

“I want to promote things that have a good impact, have a good influence in the world,” Wembanyama said. “Obviously we earn millions and millions, but that is not our biggest strength. Our biggest strength is inspiring and we can inspire in a good or a bad way. I want to inspire in a good way.”

For Wembanyama, at least, the Kalshi odds of ever signing with Kalshi — or any other sports gambling site — are 0 percent.

“Everyone does whatever they want,” Wembanyama said, “but without me.”

Johnson aims to learn from ‘Hard Knocks’

Spurs coach Mitch Johnson spent part of his offseason back home in Seattle, where he visited Seahawks training camp, sat in on meetings, watched practices and traded ideas with the NFL club’s coaching staff.

One of Johnson’s conversations with Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald even made it onto HBO’s “Hard Knocks.”

“It was selfishly very cool for me in a couple different ways,” Johnson said. “Obviously being from Seattle and following that franchise for a while, they’ve been a model organization in that league for quite some time. It was pretty cool to peek behind the curtain.”

Johnson said the experience gave him a firsthand look at the “culture and bones” of the Seahawks’ organization, things that make a team function beyond the Xs and Os.

“Everybody has their ways and their processes, but there’s really no better way to continue to evolve and learn and to improve than listening and learning and watching other people and then applying it to your own,” Johnson said. “If you can find a couple gems or things that are, it can be very impactful.”

Kornet comfortable in Year 2

Reserve center Luke Kornet entered his second training camp with the Spurs facing a shorter learning curve than his first.

“That first year goes by pretty quick,” Kornet said. “Then you come back and feel a lot more at home, a lot more comfortable and a lot more a part of the identity of the team.”

Kornet, 31, signed a four-year deal with the Spurs in the summer of 2025 and spent most of his first season as Victor Wembanyama’s backup, averaging 6.5 points and 1.9 rebounds in 68 appearances.

Now he is looking to build on that foundation rather than simply find his footing.

“You feel like you have kind of goals for yourself as opposed to the team that you want to grow on that maybe in the first year you’re just trying to settle in and find your place,’ Kornet said. “I feel like trying to take some ownership and accountability of that type of stuff is a little bit easier after you have a base.”
