Spurs coaches pay visit to Seattle Seahawks training camp

San Antonio Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson answers questions during a news conference at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Thursday, June 4, 2026, following a 105-95 loss to the New York Knicks in Game 1 of the NBA Finals.
Thousands of miles and an ocean separated the Spurs franchise player and the team’s coaching staff this week, but they both had the same goal in mind.
While Victor Wembanyama and seven of his teammates worked out together in France, Mitch Johnson and his assistants aimed for improvement in the Pacific Northwest.
Specifically, Johnson and his staff spent time at the training camp of the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks in Renton, Wash.
“It’s been a great visit, great people,” Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald said of Johnson and his assistants, per the Seahawks website.
Johnson, a native of Seattle and a fan of his hometown’s sports teams, and Macdonald “gained insight into how they each run their programs,” according to Seahawks.com.
The Spurs coaches also sat in on meetings and talked to players.
“We had a great visit with (Johnson) yesterday and kind of talked some shop with him,” said Macdonald, who guided the Seahawks to a 29-13 victory over the New England Patriots in February to gain the franchise’s second Lombardi Trophy and first since the 2013 season.

“Great people, really aligned on how we want to run our programs,” said Macdonald, who will enter his third season with Seattle boasting a 24-10 record in regular season games.
Macdonald noted that he and Johnson, both 39, followed “legendary coaches” in Pete Carroll and Gregg Popovich, respectively.
“There’s a lot of parallels,” Macdonald said.
But it was no contest when it comes to which coach knows more about the other’s sport.
“He’s really knowledgeable,” Macdonald said of Johnson, who guided the Spurs to the NBA Finals, where they lost in five games to the New York Knicks, in his first full season as head coach.
“He’s way more knowledgeable about our team and our game than I am about basketball,” Macdonald added. “I don’t really know Wemby. I’m an idiot right now when it comes to other sports.”
While the Spurs coaches were in the Seattle area, Wembanyama was going through practices at the Palais des Sports Maurice Thorez in Nanterre, France, home of the Nanterre 92, the French club where the 2026 NBA Defensive Player of the Year began his basketball journey.
The Spurs on Tuesday posted a photo on their official X account of Wembanyama alongside recently signed free agent forward Tobias Harris and six players who helped the Spurs win the 2025 Western Conference championship: Harrison Barnes, Carter Bryant, Stephon Castle, De’Aaron Fox, Dylan Harper and Jordan McLaughlin.
“I’m happy to be with you guys here,” Wembanyama told his teammates on a video the Spurs posted on X of one of their workouts.
Whether in France or back in the states, key members of the Spurs were going about the business of trying to get better.
