Spurs coach Mitch Johnson is a Seattle guy through and through.
With that in mind, it came as no surprise to learn he’s pulling hard for his hometown Mariners in their Major League Baseball showdown with the Toronto Blue Jays.
“It’s the best question you asked in a long time,” Johnson said after Wednesday’s practice when a reporter asked him, ‘How about those Mariners?’
“They’re doing a heck of a job,” he added. “It’s been fun to watch that city. Our city deserves that. We’ve been waiting a long time and those guys have done a heck of a job.”
Born and raised in Seattle, Johnson, 38, is the son of former NBA player and two-time All-Star John Johnson, who won the 1979 NBA Finals with the Seattle SuperSonics, and Jenny Redman, a former University of Washington tennis player. Mitch’s stepfather Rick Redman was an All-American football player at Washington.
A two-time All-State performer and team captain at Seattle’s O’Dea High School, Mitch guided the Fighting Irish to two state championships and averaged 22.0 points and 8.0 assists as a senior.
Unfortunately for Mitch and Seattle, the Blue Jays hit five home runs en route to a 13-4 come-from-behind win on Wednesday night at T-Mobile Park in Seattle to pull within 2-1 in the American League Championship Series.
Game 4 is set for 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Seattle.
You can bet Mitch will be tuning in.
