Wembanyama to host Spurs workouts in France, R.C. Buford reveals
Victor Wembanyama and several of his Spurs teammates and coaches will work out together this week in France, Spurs CEO R.C. Buford revealed to a French media outlet.
“Our coaches and players are going to be here together next week, doing some work in Paris,” Buford said during a recent appearance on TrashTalk. “They’re coming over to see Victor, about eight or ten of them.”
Buford didn’t say which players will be in France, but the Spurs posted a social media video Monday of second-year guard Dylan Harper in Paris visiting the Eiffel Tower. Harper is in France to participate in NBA Summer House, a fan experience hosted by the league and presented by NBA2K27.
The practices in Wembanyama’s homeland underscore the 22-year-old superstar’s leadership and the Spurs’ commitment to entering camp in top shape after losing to the New York Knicks in five games in the 2026 NBA Finals.
“He sets a great example in his approach, in the way he takes care of his body, in the way he connects with his family and with his teammates,” Buford said of Wembanyama. “There are not many times where 10 guys from a team are flying halfway around the world to go work out together. And that’s done because of the respect and admiration and joy that Victor brings.”
The workouts also give Wembanyama, who signed a five-year, $252 million maximum rookie-scale extension on July 10, and other veterans a chance to gain chemistry with the team’s offseason additions. No. 1 on that list is 34-year-old forward Tobias Harris, who signed a two-year, $31 million contract with the defending Western Conference champs on July 6.
“Tobias having the confidence to come join our club because he had so many options is a statement to our team, to our guys, that he respects who we were and the journey we were on,” Buford said.
The practices also signify the Spurs’ desire to put the loss to the Knicks, including losing 107-106 in Game 4 after leading by 29 points, behind them.
“For the first time throughout the playoffs, we probably played young and made mistakes that we hadn’t made throughout the year,” Buford said of Game 4, the largest collapse in NBA postseason history. "Not finishing Game 4 was a difficult pill to swallow after we’d played so well for the first 25 minutes or so.
“But it’s a season that our guys are proud of. And they have also a taste that they want to grow. Just seeing Victor calling his team and saying, 'Hey, come over here and spend a week with me (is encouraging).”
Wembanyama, a two-time All-Star who was the unanimous choice last season for NBA Defensive Player of the Year as well as a first-team All-NBA honoree, will participate in the workouts ahead of playing two exhibition games for the French national team in August.
Les Bleus is set to go against Serbia on Aug. 20 in Belgrade and on Aug. 23 in Orleans. The French will also host Slovenia on August 27 in the opener of the second round of 2027 World Cup qualifying and travel to Sweden on August 30.
Wembanyama’s busy offseason comes after he averaged 25.0 points, 11.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists and a league-high 3.08 blocks in 64 games last season. He was the first unanimous Defensive Player of the Year in league history and finished third in MVP voting.
