Spurs waive Jeremy Sochan after failing to make trade at deadline

After failing to find him a new home at the trade deadline, the San Antonio Spurs have waived former lottery pick Jeremy Sochan, marking a rare occasion in which a pending restricted free agent has been bought out just ahead of entering the marketplace.
The Spurs discussed potential deadline deals for Sochan with the New York Knicks, Chicago Bulls and Phoenix Suns, among others, so there is a market for Sochan’s services. Sochan, the ninth overall pick of the 2022 draft, averaged just 12.8 minutes in 28 games this season after starting 23 times the prior season.

After the trade deadline, The Athletic reported that Sochan did not intend to ask for a buyout. However, that position changed over the past week, resulting in the Spurs waiving him Wednesday.
On Tuesday evening, Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said that nothing had changed in Sochan’s plan with the team, hours before he was waived.
“He’s been asked to be the role of defensive disruptor and to be a versatile piece offensively for us and nothing’s changed in that regard,” Johnson said. “I know that Jeremy is wanting to play more, like many of the people that are playing as much, and I am glad that he wants that. That’s a competitive mindset that you have to have to be successful in this league.”
Johnson experimented using Sochan as the four in lineups with Victor Wembanyama or as a small-ball five in the first half of the season, but he eventually took Sochan out of the rotation when rookie wing Carter Bryant’s play improved.
“As of right now, he has not been in rotation, and that’s a decision that I’ve made and I expect Jeremy to continue to come to work every day, pretty professional and great teammate,” Johnson said. “He’s done exactly that. And that’s what you have to do in this league. And sometimes your opportunities don’t always come from where you think they’ll come or when you think they’ll come and you need to be ready at all times.”
The Spurs will now enter the buyout market to seek more shooting support. Veteran forward Georges Niang and guard Eric Gordon were recently waived by the Memphis Grizzlies and have a long track record as effective 3-point shooters. Niang was a core rotation player for Cleveland over the past two seasons, but has not played this season after being traded to Boston, Utah and then Memphis since the summer.
The Spurs currently have one open roster spot. San Antonio has not waived David Jones-Garcia from his two-way contract after he had season-ending ankle surgery, and he has the same agent as Sochan. Jones-Garcia showed flashes as an impact scorer in his few opportunities with the Spurs and was slated to play for the G-League team in the NBA’s Rising Stars game at All-Star weekend. The Spurs can keep Jones-Garcia on a two-way deal next season and continue to evaluate him as he recovers from his ankle injury.
