Former Spurs forward Jeremy Sochan is set to sign with the New York Knicks after he clears waivers, his agent Deirunas Visockas of Gersh Sports told ESPN on Thursday.

Sochan had 10 interested suitors after being released from the Spurs on Wednesday and landed on the Knicks as his new team, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported.

Sochan is expected to sign a league-minimum contract that runs through the rest of the season, the New York Post’s Stefan Bondy reported.

That means Sochan could soon face his former team. The Spurs are set to play at Madison Square Garden on March 1 in a game scheduled to be broadcast nationally by ABC.

Spurs-Knicks games have been some of the NBA’s most entertaining the past few years. The addition of Sochan to New York is sure to add even more spice given the Baylor alumnus’ reputation as a hard-nosed instigator.

The Spurs edged the Knicks 134-132 on Dec. 31 after losing to them 124-113 in the NBA Cup championship game two weeks earlier in Las Vegas.

The Sochan-to-the-Knicks news came shortly after the fourth-year pro penned a farewell to San Antonio via social media:

“To the city of San Antonio… When I was drafted, I didn’t realize how quickly this would feel like home,” Sochan wrote on Instagram. “I’ve moved around a lot throughout my life, and this is the longest I’ve been in the same place since I was 15 years old.

The Spurs on Wednesday bid a fond farewell to now former teammate Jeremy Sochan, who has agreed to a contract buyout after the team failed in its bid to move him before last week’s trade deadline.

The 22-year-old Sochan is expected to sign a league-minimum deal with the New York Knicks once he clears waivers, according to the New York Post. That would set up a reunion with Sochan’s old team March 1 at Madison Square Garden.

“We were all very aware of his desire to be in the rotation and given more of an opportunity, especially recently,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “We wanted to do right by him and make sure he had that opportunity before the year was over.”

Sochan’s departure marks an unceremonious closing chapter for the Spurs’ ill-fated 2022 draft class.

I always view guys like those as practice fodder. Like, you need some guys on the “b” team at practice who are strong and tall and kind of emulate a center or power forward on the opposing teams.

At least you’re self-aware that you’re not the coach or manager. So many are questioning why Sochan didn’t get minutes over Biyombo like we have all the info available. If Jeremy has more promise, is younger, more athletic, etc., etc., then your first though should be “oh I guess they must know something about him that I don’t know”… but instead other people think they’re smarter than Brian Wright and Mitch because they can’t stand to see Biyombo or Olynyk in the game over Jeremy.

I would much rather have Sochan be a rotational big over Biyombo or Kelly. Have him be the third big in small ball or maybe spot minutes at the 4 with floor spacers like Kelly at the center. It would never be our strongest lineup defensively but when Luke or Wemby arent on the floor that defense will suffer regardless.

If they were still shopping him around, which it sounds like they were, some garbage minutes time isn’t going to raise or lower his trade capital and just opens him to injury. There’s years of tape on him. A few minutes here and there isn’t going to change anyone’s mind. As soon as the trade deadline passed (feb 5), they released him (feb 11). He was released before March 1, so he is still playoff eligible.

Yeah, garbage time minutes are called that for a reason. Jeremy wants to be part of a rotation, and playing the fourth quarter of a 30 point blowout doesn’t satisfy Jeremy or help the Spurs in any meangful way.

I heard a rumor, but a he said she said rumor, that Sean Sweeney didn’t see Jeremy favorably. Don’t know if it’s personal or coaching decisions. And Mitch relies on Sean’s knowledge and opinion a lot. That’s the only thing that makes sense to me and knowing Jeremy’s feisty approach, maybe he said something to Sean Sweeney.
Idk. This is all speculation and will be until it ever comes out what happened.

Because Carter Bryant took his minutes, and the Spurs want to play CB over Sohan. It’s much better for Sohan to go to a different team and get a spot in the rotation instead of playing Olynyk minutes. Basically, the Spurs wanted to trade him but couldn’t get value. If they took a shitty trade, it’s actually really bad for Sohan’s future value, so they released him and let him sign for a market price.
It’s very respectful of the Spurs, tbh. They could have traded him for scraps which would potentially hurt Sohan’s long term value.

No the Spurs couldn’t trade Sochan for scraps. The only way a team would take Sochan was if we would’ve attached a second round pick or taken on a bad contract for them taking him. Teams thought Sochan wasn’t worth his contract.

I suspect some of Sochans flaws were going to limit his minutes on this particular team and his opinion of himself doesn’t match with what the coaches can see. Add in some frustration and soured relationship and the coaches may not play him as they ask the front office for a trade
I get it, JS was playing heavy minutes and we all saw him as “untouchable”. But the coaches probably always saw a flawed player that either needed to improve his shot and/or playing to have a place and they rapidly tried extreme measures to help those flaws.
PATFO is usually right on this. Demarre didn’t last long after the spurs. I hope Jeremy proves them wrong, he seems like an awesome person and great teammate.
