pic.twitter.com/qG1IsmTYTo— Spurs Nation (@ Spurs_Nation) June 4, 2026

Spurs’ Keldon Johnson trying ‘not to linger’ on poor Game 1 outing

San Antonio Spurs forward Keldon Johnson answers questions during a news conference at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Thursday, June 4, 2026, following a 105-95 loss to the New York Knicks in Game 1 of the NBA Finals.
Spurs forward Keldon Johnson has a sure-fire way to process the kind of disappointing performance he suffered through in Game 1 of the NBA Finals.
“I got a long drive home, so it gives you time to think about some things, clear your mind,” he said of his 45-minute journey from the Frost Bank Center to his ranch in Boerne.
The NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year had a lot digest after scoring just three points on 1-of-4 shooting from the field in a playoff-low eight minutes in the 105-95 loss to the New York Knicks on Wednesday night.
Speaking to reporters at the Frost Bank Center on Thursday, Johnson made it clear he’s ready to turn the page on his latest subpar outing in the first postseason of his seven-year career.
“When you get in a series like this, once the game is over, you process it that night and then we come back and we break it down today,” he said. "And then you got to let it go. You can’t let it linger on to other games. You can’t get too high, you can’t get too low. You got to try and stay as even-keeled as possible.
“I’ll correct those mistakes and be back at it tomorrow.”
Johnson entered Game 1 with some momentum after scoring eight of his 11 points in the fourth quarter of the Spurs’ 111-103 victory over Oklahoma City in Game 7 of the Western Conference finals on Saturday.
Keldon Johnson on only playing 8 minutes in Game 1 last night:
“It doesn’t bother me too much. We’re in the Finals. Whatever we gotta do to win, that’s what we’ll do. Our coaches will put us in the best situations to be successful. I believe that 110 percent.” pic.twitter.com/qG1IsmTYTo— Spurs Nation (@ Spurs_Nation) June 4, 2026
But that strong finish at the Paycom Center didn’t carry over to the Frost Bank Center, where he failed to grab a rebound or dish out an assist.
Through 19 playoff games, Johnson is averaging just 8.4 points, 3.2 rebounds and 0.9 assists in 18.1 minutes after finishing the regular season averaging 13.2 points, 5.4 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 23.3 minutes while playing in all 82 games.
“My job is to go out there and perform and help my teammates win,” he said. “I believe in each and every one of my teammates. So, ultimately, if I’m not out there, I know the next man up that is out there will get it done. Just like I will. Eight minutes, it doesn’t bother me too much. We’re in the Finals. Whatever we got to do to win, that’s what we’ll do. Our coaches will put us in the best situation to be successful. I believe that 110%.”
Johnson’s teammates are confident he will bounce back Friday night in Game 2.
“KJ is going to be just fine,” said forward Devin Vassell, who had a subpar game of his own in Game 1 with nine points on 4-of-11 from the field and 1-of-6 from 3-points range.
“He’s the longest-tenured player here,” Vassell added. “He’s the heart and soul of the team. He just has to be confident in himself, confident in his game, be a pest defensively, be aggressive, get on the rebounding and just trust his work. KJ’s an amazing player. I have no doubt he’ll be good.”
